People in the office update: "My grandma was always convinced that we'd go to war with China because of something in the Bible, and everything is coming from over there! I can't remember what it was, something like 'beware of the yellow....'"
I think I want to self isolate.

In X number of years of course nobody in China will either be aware of the outbreak or allowed to talk about it.
It'll be like it never happened.

Quick thought - the impact of the Coronavirus on the Italian economy, already in a parlous state, will probably bring about its exit from the EU. That is, if it is allowed to happen. It's going to be a huge shock to the Eurozone that Germany will struggle to mitigate. Not very likely to happen.

You think I should let virus fears keep me away from seeing Itzhak Perlman in rehearsal tomorrow morning? There'll be a lot of people there...

Did you see Zombieland? Be Bill Murry. get out and do stuff. people are so antsy you probably needn't worry about anybody getting in your face. well, Itzhak maybe.

There are probably as many unknown cases as there are known. Possibly more.
I wouldn't go out to places crowded with people unless you felt you needed to.

My advice, to take or leave, but I hope you take it:
Avoid big crowds or places where you will be in very close proximity.
Wash your hands often.
If you get symptoms, self-isolate.
Try and avoid visiting your elderly or vaguely sick relatives-for their sake. When(if) this kicks off the elderly and pre-infirm will likely not get admitted to ‘Critical Care’ for ventilation/‘high-care’. The system will be overwhelmed.

Going from anecdotal evidence from other places on the net, from people who have been exposed to those tested positive, who show the symptoms and still haven't been tested, I'd take current UK figures with a big pinch of salt. Which isn't to suggest any cover up, just a lack of resources.
My mother is in hospital herself at the moment getting a new hip put in and I'm hesitating about even visiting her tonight. It's been confirmed that it has reached here. I will, but given both my parents are over 65 and have other conditions I'll probably have to limit my visits in the near future.

They even closed the school district today on account of an infected teacher. I don't know...when am I going to get the chance to see Itzhak Perlman again? And for free!

I'm going to the royal opera house in early May.
I'll be fucking raging if it's cancelled!

At school we have been gearing up for some sort of managed exclusion in the next fortnight so that the kids are out of school for a month when taking the easter holiday into consideration.

Nadine Dorries has got it.
So we can safely assume that a lot more people have it than is officially known.

Made a trip to Target today to buy various sundries (aluminum foil, cat litter, etc.). Spent a good ten minutes circling the store looking for the toilet paper (which, traditionally, is kept in a very intuitive "can't miss it" spot). When I finally returned to the first place I'd looked, I discovered that there were vast expanses of empty shelf space (I'd mistaken them for construction, initially), with something like a grand total of five remaining 4/8/12 packs of TP in a retail space that would normally contain several hundred.
As a gag/trope on animated television, "disaster based hoarding" has always been a reliable laugh. Mostly cause it always seemed so improbable.
