It was his mam's birthday when he was in Durham and his wife's birthday when he and his car were seen in Barney Castle. Coincidence of course.

Are they really just going to carry on and hope it blows over? I mean, I know we've got 4 years of this lot yet, which is an awful lot of time. They've been the most incompetent government in Europe, leading to over 60,000 deaths so far, and the only time they've put any kind of concerted effort into anything is to defend a man who flagrantly broke the rules of lockdown. Is it possible to ride this one out? I don't get why Boris is supporting him when he clearly knows he was also in Castle Barnard on a separate excursion. It makes no sense not to come clean now. He's lied himself into a corner. He can't backtrack now.

He drove 30 miles to Barnard Castle to see if he could drive safely? There's umpteen villages along that route mate it's not an abondoned airstrip.

It was a mistake to have him out there on the lawn. He should have issued a statement.

He drove 30 miles to Barnard Castle to see if he could drive safely? There's umpteen villages along that route mate it's not an abondoned airstrip. That was the weakest part of his story. It wasn't clear to me why, after his kid had wanted to go to the loo, they didn't just get back in the car rather than sit around the river as they did. I was surprised none of the press followed that up.

EDIT - I couldn't be arsed to argue about this.

Brilliant.
I'm off to Facebook to call people names. At least they have opinions there.

They've handled this in the usual way: assume the criticism is some conspiracy from "The Left" and scoff it away.
Maybe it will fizzle out in terms of headlines but the impact it has made on trust in the government is genuinely dangerous, right at the moment when the first wave is declining and complacency is a huge issue.

I guess they're hoping it will fizzle out, yeah. Everything does eventually. Still - I don't remember there being such unanimity among all sections of the press, the people, celebrities on Twitter etc. etc. Even the fucking Mail

There'd be better served reserving their outrage for the continuing failure to adequately protect people in care homes. That's actually cost lives.

This kind of thing works much better than PMQs. He's on his own here, no-one can just play to the crowd of MPs behind them.

She really tore him a new one. Johnson was pathetic, waffling on about washing hands rather than answer the question. He's a joke, almost as bad as Trump.
