She was on fire. I've always liked her but she was cool and measured and really made her point and showed him up.
It was a mistake for Cummings to do his bit from the garden and it was a mistake for BJ to do this thing this afternoon. I don't think he's an idiot by any means (if ever there was a wrong-headed criticism of a leader...) but he looks terrible right now. Something has to happen because it's not going to fizzle out any time soon - and they know that.

He's massively out of his depth.

So what was all that 'this is very BRAVE of you, Prime Minister' shit from the Scottish fella?
It was a good set-up if nothing else.

I'm just dropping into this thread now so I don't know if anyone else has already brought this up, but I've been intently studying this lately: www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/Pay special attention to the percentage of deaths as compared to total cases. Allowing for the fact that different countries may have different accuracy rates and different standards of counting, it looks to me like the US and UK are at about the highest death as percentage of cases in the world along with a few other European countries. Some of it has to be attributable to climate, as witnessed by the vast difference between Eastern US states and Southern ones, but is it out of line to suspect inept and/or corrupt government plays a part too? Is it a coincidence that principalities led by women are having much fewer cases and almost no deaths?

I hate putting it like this, statistically Eire is doing well. 1600 unfortunate deaths out of a population of 5 million. That's still 1600 families and their friends affected which is sad. We had a strict lockdown early doors which was largely adhered to. Bit of an issue with northerners coming down who were under british version of the fight against the virus. We had about a hundred people try to label the lockdown with clichés like Nazism and leo is a dictator etc, but they were laughed and thrown out of court and were generally told to fuck off by the rest of the country. Things are beginning to ease up now, social distancing down to one metre instead of two, and small groups of 3 to 4 people are allowed.

I had to drive to Peckham yesterday. Saw absolutely no sign of any social distancing whilst driving through South London. Loads of people out and lots of young men gathering in clusters. The weather hasn't helped.

The government has no moral authority to issue rules now. That's the bottom line.
Anyway - if you haven't seen members of your extended family for several weeks, what's the first thing you're going to do? Stand 2 meters away and say 'hello how have you been?'? Fuck off

Well, I've distanced appropriately with several members of my family. I saw my brother yesterday from the top of his balcony - he's classed as vulnerable because he's been undergoing chemo. Both of my father-in-laws are vulnerable so we have to adhere to the guidelines.
So, yes, actually some of us are - we are making appropriate judgements on a case-by-case basis. I picked up my sister in the car and drove her for a couple of hours. That's not social distancing, but it was an essential journey and she doesn't want to take public transport.

Fuck off Likewise here. Though in answer to your second question, I think it depends who's getting together with who and how acquainted they are with the facts. Here as things are opening up, people I know, at least are meeting outdoors, wearing masks, and doing exactly that. Of course the "do as I say, not as I do" phenomenon is the same - there's a big difference between what it says on the White House website and what our Bufoon-in-Chief does publicly.

Last night's Newsnight had an extended report on the Italian hospital that recorded the first European case of the virus, and it's very much worth a watch. The doctor central to the whole piece is honest and talks a lot about his experiences - you get a full picture of what these heroic folk have to go through:

Apparently Cummings has said that if he's still headline news - literally - tomorrow, then he'll step down.

To further illustrate my point about the destructive potential of Covid-19 on the EU
New. "Which of following statements comes closest to the EU's role in your country during coronavirus?"
"The EU helped my country" Germans 40% French 41% Italians 30%
"The EU has not helped my country" Germans 60% French 59% Italians 70%
Redfield & Wilton May 22-25
"Has being a member of the #EU had a positive or negative effect on your country?
"Positive" Germans 35% French 28% Italians 23%
"Neither positive nor negative" Germans 41% French 40% Italians 31%
"Negative" Germans 18% French 23% Italians 41%
"What is your interpretation of how the EU and member states responded to the coronavirus crisis"
"Member states acted together, as one" Germans 18% French 13% Italians 9%
"Member states acted separately, on their own" Germans 71% French 73% Italians 83%

Trump's going to have to produce some sort of leadership in the next week, although I wonder whether protests will be at the same intensity during the week. It feels like an open goal for Biden at the moment to step up.
