I found both picks rather boring and going for far too long. In the end the few excursions out of the repetitive chord sequence of A provided a nice distraction, whilst Sugarcane playing over Mayall singing got a bit on my tits. Not looking forward to playing either again, TBH.

Both appalling.
A had that second-hand record shop smell, a boring beard behind the counter lost in the whole unmistakable PROG stink. Interminable 'jamming' without any sense of purpose or style.
and B managed to be even worse!

When I worked in record stores, the Jean Luc Ponty and John Mayall sections always had tons of albums in them. Everyone sold them and no one would buy them.
Abstain.

Enigmatic Ocean? Twat. Hmm, this is a horrible thing, reminds me a little of Ed Alleyne-Johnson's busking in Chester, but at least he doesn't have the rancid funk backing. Perhaps all prog-violin sounds like this, but I have no other frame of reference.
B had a dreadful aimless intro, but the bluesy backing give it a bit of weight, provided the emotion that the fiddle wasn't providing on its own. It drags on a bit, doesn't it, but at least it seems to be something approximating music. It's not the kind of thing I'd choose to listen tom but it wasn't as abhorrent as A.

As others have said, these are both pretty damned drab, and for good measure, take an awfully long time to get to the point.
Maybe I should have stuck with this theme after all?
A is shorter and slightly less cliche.

A is fusion, not prog. FFS. I did have a Ponty CD once. It wasn't played too much, admittedly. This is quite a relaxed piece, if a bit plastic.
B would be better used to fit a soundtrack. I'm picturing some kind of Flannery O Connor type thing about oddball religious southerners and prostitutes. Mayall was from Macclesfield which fits good enough.
B, I guess.

Although i've often thought i should like Ponty's music, it has never really clicked with me. It just doesn't have that certain spark or whatever to hook me in. B is quite nice and i'll take a bit of this.

Unlike seemingly everyone else, I rather enjoyed A which had a pretty guitar figure and propulsive and funky drumming. Ponty's treated violin lifts and gives flight to the track. B is a little too brown rice for me and failed to capture my interest.

a interesting idea to have the violinist take the place of the vocalist, but ultimately it did all seem a bit aimless. b Don Harris was the first electric violin player I ever heard. This is a pretty dolorous outing, but fairly typical of his sorrowing style. Seemed to meander a bit, but that may just be me misunderstanding music. The only Mayal I ever bought was the Beano album, fifty-odd years ago. Ultimately, I just find his voice, his persona, his work, simply dull. Personally I'm perfectly happy for Don to play through his vocals They were both pretty long and undistinguished to me, but it's a B for me

Is it the purpose of these two picks to lull me into a boredom so profound that out of pure desperation I make a choice just to get it to stop?
Well, I made it through A without slitting my wrists, and B didn't seem to quite as long so I'll give it the nod.

I have A. It’s great. The album features Allan Holdsworth too, just like the Soft Machine track elsewhere.
I like Sugarcane. He’s on a great Zappa cover of a Little Richard song, plus he’s featured throughout Hot Rats.
A gets it

Don Sugarcane Harris is THE SHIT. I like the JLP too but it does bring back some patchouli oil & bell bottomed pants guilt by association.

I liked the actual violin sound in B moreso than A. I vote B.
