Dawkins wants to party like it’s 1924. Da

You’ve gotta wonder how a post like that comes to be. Was RD just puttering around in the garden thinking about Eugenics?

It doesn't particularly work for the dogs though, does it? Given the number of health problems and disabilities it creates.

It's just thinking out loud. One can recognise how morally problematic it is whilst also recognising that it would also "work".
Much ado about nothing

I think the “ghastly-omoter” depends entirely on what he means when he says eugenics would “work” Work how exactly & for who? Did eugenics “work” in Virginia in 1924? God, I hope not.

Says a lot about the state of British politics and journalism, that we're not arguing about public spending decisions, but discussing whether Nazism is actually bad. Get eugenics done.

I don't like Dawkins much but he went on to explain his tweet in greater detail later, essentially saying that there are no moral grounds for eugenics

I don't like Dawkins much but he went on to explain his tweet in greater detail later, essentially saying that there are no moral grounds for eugenics Twitter shouldn't be used for complex issues or things that are contentious. Even with highly intelligent people like Dawkins, the penny doesn't seem to be dropping with regard to this. It's an ego thing, they like the attention.

Or they assume people are smarter than they are
I agree, Twitter isn't the place for that kinda thing.
It's a bit like me going on Twitter and using ironic offensive language...some will get the joke...most won't #canceldougie

Misses the point though. You need to qualify a statement like "Eugenics would work". For whom and why?
It's not just an ideological argument against eugenics. He overlooks the vast amount of health defects and disabilities that selective breeding gives animals. It works for us, because we get more produce from them and dog breeders get richer.

I don't know the specifics, but the NHS screens for Down's Syndrome and several other conditions in the first and second trimester.
The mother can make the decision to terminate their pregnancy at up to 24 weeks.
Is that not a form of eugenics?

It's to make sure the baby's medical needs are met. Separately, a mother has a right to choose. Neither of these fit within the definition "practices that aim to improve the genetic quality of a human population, typically by excluding people and groups judged to be inferior, and promoting those judged to be superior."

I guess the clumsy point I'm trying to make here is that we have a situation where parents can make an informed decision on whether to continue with a pregnancy or not based on medical data. It does happen - that there is no doubt about.
I would argue that is a form of eugenics.
I worked in dating for a number of years. The next inevitable step with dating will be DNA screening. At a higher level of wealth, prospective partners will need to submit a valid DNA test which will show up all the possible inheritance that they would potentially pass on.
The more knowledge we have about medicine and our bodies, the more selective we become.
There is an argument I guess that someone with amazing genes who's ugly as fuck might find themselves top of the gene pool!
