It might surprise some of you to hear this, but as it happens, I'm not particularly fond of The Beatles. This is a dirge, it sounds like someone dicking about in the studio in the hope that a song will happen, that the muse will strike. But it doesn't, you've just go some half-arsed vocals, shitty organ, and a bored session musician on cello passing the time.
And B is quite half-arsed and Beatlesy too, though there's equal parts Beach Boys and Mary Chain in there, too. It's not something I'd choose to listen to, though there's always something pleasant about the "recorded in a tin can underwater" production aestehetic.
Both shite. B

Goggles at the ready, I find A a clever way to shoehorn the boys into a non-Beatlish theme. Probably their only song that would fit.
I like some MF but feel like they're consistently let down by their need to have a gimmick for each record. I forget what it was for this one, but I think it has something to do with the feedback that runs through it. Might be a perfectly good song if they'd let it breath a bit.

I think that's the first thing I've heard by Magnetic Fields. It's pretty good. It certainly beats A, which is one of a small number of Beatles songs I really do not like.

All the youtube links for the Magnetic Fields track seem muddy..From the actual CD, it sounds much clearer and is a pretty good song. This was out of left field, noise pop Merritt and was part of the "No synth Trilogy" (i, Distortion, Realism) I like the JAMC do Gothic Archies tunes sort of thing..
Blue Jay Way is one of my better liked Beatles tracks..
Vote B for being a more daring choice..

I don't need to say much about B which was pretty tepid. A thin, nasally melody is applied to a lot of noise in what has become a bit of an indie lo-fi cliche. Now A is far more interesting and within the context of this board a far braver choice. Those that followed the thread on this song on bcb will know it's probably their most divisive song, people either love it or hate it. Me I love it ( didn't always, it's crept up on me through the years). I do get if you approach it purely as a song it has real failings. But immerse yourself into its sound with its hypnotic, swirling layers and you're in for a hell of a trip. It"s one of The Beatles most out there productions and a peak of their psychedelic experimentation. Brilliantly original...still! A

There are bits of B I like, but there's a stop-start feeling to it that just kills any momentum for me within the song. I've never loved A but it wins here no problem.

I've never been fussed about A but it has some nice touches. I've always dug Ringo's stoned drumming.
But I quite liked B.

As much as I like A as a piece of music, B is a proper tune and actually evokes 'California' to me.

I could go on for days about how much I fucking love that Distortion album. Pop it on, crank it and let that noise just envelop me.
I vote B.

a three scousers (was john on holiday?) and none of them know what to do with a football? Losers. This is a dire mess, a horrible dirge, about as psychedelic as a cup of sick.
b I think Stepin Merritt is a perfectly ginchy artist, and Distortion is the only MF album I never heard, but based on this I think I ought to give it a try. In truth, it had only to turn up to win it, but fortunately it's an interesting listen.
