I like it. For an 80s thing it's pretty unoffensive.

Loved this as a kid. The jazz elements of his music can seem naff I suppose, but not to me.

'cause there's melody and structure and stuff. You've outdone yourself on the analysis there, Dave.

^I like it, but not as much as 'Steppin Out'.

We saw him a little over a year ago (and I suppose I'd seen him about 15 years prior) - fantastic show, great voice, great repertoire ("Real Men" is a big fave, and he did play it). There's a vulnerability to his best stuff that I like.
Anyhow, one of his gambits on this last tour was that (for the first time ever), they attempted to recreate the record of "Steppin Out", which meant (if I'm remembering this accurately) enlisting a roadie to play the glockenspiel, moving either the drummer or bassist over to organ, and using the old drum machine and sequencer from the track. Given that the rest of the act was reasonably spontaneous, it was a nice touch, and really illustrated the effectiveness of the original arrangement (which I gather he has always toyed with in one way or another, ala "Is She..." on the live album).
