Hmm. I guess this is a rare pick that might count as freakfolk, it starts off as a fairly standard guitary folk piece with irritating vocals. I mean, is it just me or are those both those vocalists really bastard annoying? It's a genuine obscurity. Not actually pleasant or interesting to listen to though.
Pentangle are never freakfolk but they sure as hell are a better band. It's a slightly dull choice of band, but the track is lovely, Jacqui's voice soars, and that sitar in the left channel is a lovely splash of colour. I mean, I'd love to vote for A on the grounds of being more fitting for the theme, and an obscure choice, but it doesn't compare against something as lovely as this.

Well, B is from one of my very favourite albums so A would have had to excel itself to stand a chance. Which it might have done if it had a singer.

I remember hearing one of MD's tracks on one of Votel's comps and it blew me away. I managed to get hold of their very rare album on one of these blogs, but it wasn't nearly so good. A has a certain childlike charm, but it's a bit of a scrap that doesn't really go anywhere. The Pentangle song is a bit too trad/ finger in the ear to really interest me, but the buzzing sitars give it some interest and atmosphere. This is a relatively boring track from a very good band. Because I think the voting so far is overstating the superiority of B, I'm going to throw A a bone.

A is nothing special, but the only freak folk element about B is the sitar, so...

I remember hearing one of MD's tracks on one of Votel's comps and it blew me away. I went to check Vatel's two "Four Letter Words" CDs and there it was: Cefalea
... but it's not much better.

I like both of these just fine, though neither really shake my world. I'm a big fan of the Pentangle, but this one has always seemed a lesser light on that album, enjoyable but slight. A has a similar gentle charm, a bit hippy-folkish in a good way. It gets an extra point for being a deeper pick.

A few words about Música Dispersa, since it's not likely that you find anything in English. They were a short lived combo that only released an LP in the musical desert that was Spain in 1970 (hard to imagine from abroad). They sold like a couple hundred copies before disbanding as the band leader (Cachas) was required to join the military service. Then in 1975, when another member (Jaume Sisa) achieved an unexpected success, starting a long hit-and-miss-but-always-interesting career, this old album was rescued and re-released getting a certain cult status that has remained until today. For me, its approach to psych-folk done with more imagination than means, is a personal favourite, though I was pretty sure it was bound to lose any match.
B is one of those reiterative folk pieces with a zillion verses all sounding the same. Yeah, she's got a beautiful voice but not my cuppa, at all.

Where’s the Freak in A? Or in B too for that matter. Surely Pentangle are more Realalefolk. So neither fits the bill but the better track is

I found A to be very dull. B was very good and quite irritating thus cancelling itself out.

A was all right, and better than that in places. B was Pentangle, the very definition of straightfolk. And I don't like the vocals.
Protest vote for A
