I understand if it's a bit too Austin Powers in retrospect... In theory, I should hate it for these reasons (there was a point around then when seemingly the whole world went tackily retrograde in the most surface and facile fashion), but...I guess these touches just work for me in context. It's a whole thing - a short, sharp shock of a record, concise, catchy, energetic, dynamic, and...yeah, there's something about the sound of the Maisonnettes massed "unison but not unison" vocals that just pops for me. It came up on random a week or so ago, and it sounded like a million bucks. And, yet - it did occur to me that there was probably something divisive about it. I can't tell you why one person's application of anachronistic elements strikes me as puerile and loathsome, and another person's seems wholly satisfying. There's hidden elements at play in art - even leaving the eye of the beholder out of it, there's various accidents of synergy and alchemy that drive a thing. I mean, there was a time when Broadcast might have been my favorite group on Earth, but...easily, another person could have come along at that very moment and smugly picked apart the sort of retro-futuristic elements and started talking about The United States of America or whomever.

Tried as I might, I just could not unlike the first album by The Strokes. Nothing wrong with a little theft if executed properly.

Admit it, you'll just go for anything featuring a Coral guitar.
