This really is tough. I like both a lot. Going to have to listen to both a few times.
Will edit in choice at some later point.

Neither of these are really my thing at all, but I'll take the stylish melancholy of
A
over the wilful racket of B

Andrew Bird again? He was one of the highlights of round 4, but then round 4 was almost a pint of whisky and 10 packs of paracetemol for me. This doesn't impress me as much, I think it's the vocal which is a bit overdone in some way, he's not really over-emoting, but he's not delicate or understated enough for the tune. Plenty violin though.
I bought this album! Haven't listened to it in bloody years, I don't recall thinking that much of it to be honest. Good to have something with a hint of chaos about it though, even if it is unfortunately Australian. Like The Tindersticks on PCP. It really could do with someone mumble-slurring some miserable nonsense over the top. Yeah, this is a good 'un, folk music for a Saturday night fight in a city-centre beer garden. Really good pick.

Tough as I like them both. Bird is on the edge of over-preciousness (as usual?) but the vocal is nicely understated for him, and the violin is both necessary and ingratiating.
B is a bit of a racket, but not an unappealing one to my ears.
Close, but I'm going to go with the more unusual use of the subject instrument.

I do like a lot of the elements of A - there's some really nice instrumentation and a strong vocal' but the song itself seems very weak to me, barely there at all. B was just a clattering mess.

A is ok, but B stomps all over it. The D3 made some excellent records in the 90s; i must get around to hearing if they've done anything good more recently. Great pick.

I did like both. B might be more exciting, but the beauty of A gained me.

Apples vs oranges, and a ripe, tasty version of each. Considering I'd never heard of him before this cup, I find he's growing on me: again, this track reminds me of Tom Rapp for some reason, or maybe Momus, which is not a bad thing: I have a fondness for slightly fey vocalisation. And B really was a tremendous propulsive racket, which filled the time admirably without actually taking me anywhere. Don't want to abstain:

B The last one of theirs that I have is '98s 'Ocean Songs', but it appears that they kept recording up until 2012. Let me know if you do dig into their later stuff - I'd be curious to know if it's worth hearing. B
