the guy who is most famous for murder scenes involving straight razors, power drills and chainsaws says he thinks modern films have lost a sense of beauty.
I'm a fan despite him having WAY more than his share of klunkers. I've always found him a distinctive filmmaker & a frank, unguarded interview subject. this one is no exception.

He makes some good points about the quality of the digital pitcher as compared to lit film. I guess all old guys end up talking like this sooner or later. I think it's interesting that he considers his studio "A-List Director" period as his best.

Oh he's not wrong about the pitfalls of digital..The art of cinematography has changed drastically in the digital age and not for the better. Some films still "Get" it, but too many fall in love with the toolbox, rather than the camera..

I think his opinions are totally valid. I too marvel at the craft of movies made in those days. on the other hand, things like YouTube thrill me no end. Remember "Vines"? well, it's come and gone. I think it's safe to say that there was no Vine equivalent of "Intolerance" or something but I'd like to think that there very well could have been.
new tools call for new thinking & approaches. I'm looking forward to DePalma's sexual predator movie and I hope it gets made. I hope he gets to use the tools he finds most appropriate to his style. I'm looking forward to other creative filmmakers adapting the tools available to their own style.
I think it's great that many upcoming artists are aware of the craft and beauty of the past but, in all honesty, I'm often excited by those who don't.

I'm not the cineaste you guys are (come to think of it, I'm pretty sure I've never seen a DePalma flick), but I enjoyed that.

Carrie, Untouchables, Scarface, Mission Impossible ? If you are going to try him out, boot up Dressed to Kill or Body Double..Both are in his Hitchcock wheelhouse, but both are fun watches..

I'm VERY fond of "Blow Out" which is sort of like "Blow Up" for morons.
