I always thought that Goldfrapp were like Muse in that they were very derivative and musically not that impressive, but they churn out stuff which really appeals (not necessarily to the particularly discerning). But knowing all that I still really like some of their stuff. I like this a lot. I would probably even voted for them even if they weren't up against Van Halen.

I always thought that Goldfrapp were like Muse in that they were very derivative and musically not that impressive Almost the opposite is true of their first album which is both very original and highly musical. But I would agree that when they went down the more commercial bump and grind electro route they were quite derivative. It worked for them commercially, but artistically they were far less interesting.

Not a fan of Goldfrapp. And that's one of VH's better efforts.

Goldfrapp is the ultimate "everything I dislike in music in one band" band. A's not that bad for what it is, I just don't like what it is.
B is of course lunk-headed and revels in its own ridiculousness. It's a bit overplayed in my world, but I still prefer it. Interesting that both are sexual metaphors, but in this case I have to admit I like the less subtle one!

As I said earlier I thought Goldfrapp's debut was extraordinary, so I was more than disappointed when they opted for the kind of clichéd techno-sleaze offered here. It's like warmed up Moroder long after the dish has gone cold and it tries way too hard. That said AG gives the chorus enough sensuality to pull the record through. B is equally clichéd, but its clichés have less worth to them to begin with. Sometimes this stuff can be saved by a good riff or earworm chorus, but this has neither. It's music without spark or invention made by dull thickoes. But it's "fun", right? A

I like both but I'll go A. VH were always mercenaries but I think, around this time, it was getting a little "by the numbers" for me. it's a good track - I like it. I just think the band is starting to run on fumes (for me, anyway)

Not really a fan of Goldfrapp either, but at least someone else has gone for a track which sonically represents the theme. Could've picked something a bit harsher, but this big-budget Glitter Band thing is a welcome breath of electronica. I'm guessing it's going to get my vote anyway, given the opposition.
I reckon if there's only one thing that myself and G are in complete agreement about, it's Van Halen. Or at least, this track, anyway. Donald Trump's hair in aural form.

My first instinct is that I'd vote for that fucking singing parrot over Van Halen. I pressed play at least.
By the way the last two Goldfrapp albums I thought were a decent return to form, without being all too memorable.

A - It’s difficult not to hear Donna Summer/Giorgio Moroder in this track. And that’s about all it’s got going for it, sadly. B - Well. It’s only rock n roll. The song is almost OK but is marred by hollow-sounding drums and emaciated guitars. But at least it’s itself.

From possibly my fave album by my fave band, Panama is pretty groovy. It’s one of weaker tunes on the album. It shits on pretty much everything else in the cup. Unapologetic and cool.

Gah, this should be an easy win for B. One of the best US singles of the early 80s, vs. warmed up disco flotsam.

Seriously, I listened to them both as I had no idea about either, but I couldn't find any joy anywhere. b
