The American version of Withnail and I has been given the green light, it saddens me to hear. Robert Downey Jr is playing Withnail, Sam Rockwell is playing Marwood, and (most surprisingly perhaps) John Goodman is cast as Uncle Monty.
I thought they'd leave this one alone - just this one. For us. But no.
We've always got the option of ignoring it completely, I suppose.

I was a little surprised about how disliked Withnail was on here when I picked it in the comedy cup. Really disliked.

I love it. To the point of being a bit of a fan. I've always had a thing about Bruce Robinson anyway but the film is just ... wonderful. I cannot tell you of my horror when, on return from a Spandau Ballet gig in Brighton, my husband told me that the spare ticket he gave to someone else because I wouldn't even contemplate going to see them was the seat next to Paul McGann. I've seen Richard E Grant around Richmond a few times, and on the tube to there. See? Sadfan.
Hopefully what will happen will be like what they did with High Fidelity - a good thing but something entirely different.

The actors they've cast are way too old, they're a good 15 years too old for the roles.

It doesn't occur to me to deceive others like that. So it doesn't occur to me that things may be lies. Even, apparently, on April the fucking first.

You were the one person who got me today, John. Nicely done.
(Probability was a factor, sadly)

Did you mean this, G? or was it just something you posted in the spirit of the thread? It was a genuine comment, you fooled me! Maybe 'really disliked' was an exaggeration, but it certainly wasn't liked much. See for yourself! preludin.proboards.com/thread/1747/comedy-cup-r5m2-fonz-win

I understand why people enjoy it rather than find it funny (like Ray) - like reading Wilde, you don't tend to laugh out loud. But it's still amusing.

I laugh out loud, or at least I did the first ten times. I think what you've written above narrows the humour down to a kind of literary wit too much. The sheer gusto of the performances is equally, and perhaps more, important.
