Tell us when you first heard them - how did you react? was it in 'real time'? I was aware of "How Soon Is Now?" around the time it was released, when I was 5 or 6. We had the radio and MTV on all of the time, so I no doubt heard it from one of those outlets. I liked the song ok but not enough to get any albums. Later, MTV would play Morrissey solo music and I remember we thought he was a brooding weirdo.
What's your favourite Smiths' song? and your least-favourite? "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out" is the obvious choice but it's a classic as far as I'm concerned. I never cared for "Sheila Take a Bow".
Did they manage to put out a great album? I don't listen to their albums often, but when I have there is always point where I get bored. They're probably best experienced in a singles and choice album cuts collection.
Where would you rank them with the other Manc greats (JD, Fall, Buzzcocks, Roses...)? About even with Herman's Hermits.
How do you think (or maybe you know) they're regarded by young people today? are they a 'lasting' band, would you say? In America, they are most likely ignored by the younger generations. The music savvy kids may end up listening to them. My boy's first concert was to a Morrissey gig, so there's that!
