Took 'em forty years to come up with THAT? Mediocre in every sense of the word. They don't sound very thrilled to be back, do they?

They don't, no.
They're 'classy', they're in good voice, but neither are especially memorable.
The de-aging malarkey is a bit odd too.
Ah, I dunno. I wanted to be moved. It doesn't take much these days!

Rave Guardian review and lots of gushing in the comments. I've just posted that I find the songs mediocre, so let's see if I become the most unpopular person in Britain.

'I Still Have Faith In You' is growing on me. Those two voices together...it's powerful stuff.

The second is definitely the better of the two, but it does have too much sheen, like every instrument's been double-disinfected for your safety.
The vocals are indeed really nice, particularly in the ott parts.

The praise for these two tracks is wildly overstated. I get it because both do a good job of replicating the late period Abba sound, but they're like sheep in wolf's clothing, trying to be something they're not. They sound the part until you realise the songs are very ordinary. Neither will become truly loved in my opinion, once people get bored of the packaging.

They sound the part until you realise the songs are very ordinary. Neither will become truly loved in my opinion, once people get bored of the packaging. I think anyone who expected them to come back almost 45 years to the day after "Dancing Queen" with...well, "Money, Money, Money", I guess... That's just the thing, though - no one expected that. Maybe a very silly person somewhere. But assuredly not you or I. I think what you are witnessing (and what I, personally, experienced yesterday) is something like massive relief. The fact that "Oh, wow - it actually (against all odds and grim expectations) sounds like ABBA!" released a lot of dopamine around the world (ala Free As a Bird, maybe?) that assuredly WON'T last forever, but...I was quite happy that Agneta and Frida singing in unison somehow still improbably does what it always did. Those sort of grand "I Have a Dream"-esque melodies, to whatever extent they may fall short of things that existed many decades ago (and to whatever extent they may appear to be a contrivance of those things - we may never truly know when a person is "attempting to sound like themselves")...for me, that it even comes within light years of their actual body of work is absolutely cause for joy. So...yeah, you're not wrong, but...in this instance, there may be something fairly thankless about being persistently right.

I remember when Thierry Henry came back to Arsenal the second time. He was clearly nothing like the player he was, indeed he could barely run. But just seeing him in an Arsenal shirt again was a hugely emotional moment for me.When he scored against Leeds I cried. I'm not sure another Arsenal goal has meant more to me. I guess these Abba records are kind of like that for many.
