As a counterpoint to Dougie's comment that many albums are top-heavy. The obvious one for me is The Sisters of Mercy's debut, but how many others are there?

White Light White Heat has my favourite second side of any album I ever heard.

Just better, or "first side is a bit rubbish, second side is great"? First side doesn't have to be rubbish. First and Last and Always has a pretty good A side, most of the singles were from that. Just that the second side is sublime from start to finish. I did wonder whether I should expand the topic to be significantly different, too? For instance Thomas Leer and Robert Rental's The Bridge, where the A side is synthpop and the B side is ambient soundscapes. Or Napalm Death, twice they've changed almost the entire line-up between side A and Side B of an album.

Steppenwolf 7. Last track on Side 1, "Renegade", is epic, but the rest of the side seems to be running on fumes. Side 2 is almost all killer, and even the little bit of filler is engaging.

Ok, a bit obvious, but, you know..... (cue a load of people telling me the medley is crap and it's all about Maxwell's Silver Hammer)

I wish I was the kind of person that could rattle off better side twos than side ones and am always amazed at people's abilities to do such a thing.

I'm annoyed with myself that I can't rattle off more! It's the kind of thing I tend to notice, 'cause most albums are front-loaded.
