All good ( although it would be nice if we talked about some other records sometimes as I do object to the view that PF2 is the only Associates record worth talking about). PF2 and Rip it Up are a level above the others. I bought four of these at the time.

The Arsenal full back Keiron Tierney is the spitting image of the young Roddy Frame btw.

There might be others worth talking about but that one is undeniably their best. I will not countenance any dissent on this point, sorry.

I still haven't decided but it's one of the first three. Lloyd Cole actually manages to sound WORSE today than it did at the time

It is their most commercial song, so tends because of it, to get disproportionate attention. They have a really fascinating catalogue.

In order for me:
Party Fears Rip It Up Don't Talk To Me... Perfect Skin Oblivious. I played this one to death when it came out ( I seem to remember it got a re-release and became a hit second time round). These days I find the chorus only so so ( and find those female backing vocals positively off-putting), but I still think the verses, middle eight and that Spanish guitar are great.

That burbling 'underwater' sound in 'Rip It Up' kind of annoys me. But it's a lovely song.

The Roland bass synth is one of the things I love about it. First time it had been used on a UK hit I believe and shortly after it became the cornerstone of Chicago House.

I love it too. It elevates it a little. I love some squelchy synth!

Somehow these are still not punishment enough for trump's Lysol/bleach remarks.

Obvious choice, but Oblivious. I agree with G - I'm a big fan of the first Associates album.
Edwyn Collins sounds so contrived. I liked Altered Images, but a little goes a long way. The Associates were the most musically adventurous and that's probably due to Rankine. I think he teaches music at a university now. Lloyd Cole is very hit and miss.

There was something in the water.
The AI tune is a real pop gem. I picked it for the cup too.
Rip It Up is irresistable.
I like Oblivious but it sounds a bit light here. We Could Send Letters is the marvel of that album.
Never saw the fuss about Lloyd Cole...the weakest of the bunch for me.
Party Fears Two is one of the most transcendent pop songs of that era. Always thrills, never fails.
