They have someone here who was raised in a Greek family with Greek as my first language, and they don't think to ask! (rolls eyes in a possibly universally understandable manner) I was the one who asked, and was hoping you would answer. I didn't even know you were talking about this, in a thread called "name that bird"! 😂 The Greek word for yes is "Naí", pronounced simply as the first two letters of the word "ne(t)". The word for no is "óhi", but this one is a bit tougher; the o is pronounced like the o in "o(rder), and the i is pronounced like the i in "i(nk), but that consonant sound is not one found naturally in standard English. It's kind of like an h- sound, but a bit more guttural, strangulated. It's a bit like the sound you make when you're trying to clear something stuck to the top and back of your mouth, whereas a normal English h- is a lot more clear and open mouthed.

And the 'nod' is an interesting one. The usual nod of affirmation as we know it in England/Aust/the US etc., is one or two full up-and-downs of the head. You have the lift and the bring down, quite clear. There is a head gesture in Greece that means no, but it is just the first part of our usual nod; a quick tilt of the heads upwards, often combined with a lifting of the eyebrows or a closing of the eyes.

So the head motion is like a UK/US person might do when saying "Oy that again" maybe
