May 1990 was the moment "Madchester" really peaked, particularly with "Step On". Spike Island was on May 27th.
It never really sustained itself like "Britpop" did - there were only two bands of any real value.

I went 'Step On' it's the 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' of baggy. I mean i don't even hear it anymore when it's playing. I was already a Monday's fan from 'Bummed'... & I really loved 'Step On'.but I was really dissapointed with the Pills, Thrills, it just felt too smooth, I thought the production killed it. Sounds so dated now, Bummed still sounds pretty decent.

I love it all, but not doesn't take much for it to get pretty indistinct pretty quickly.

I went for The Inspiral Carpets, there's something about it's cheesy attempt at a grandiose statment that is really quite effective, despite itself. I mean, it's teetering on the edge of being The Proclaimers, but that drum is ace, and those weedy synths give it an air of Woolworths that's quite charming.
I also quite like the 808 State thing, because it sounds like someone rapping over a Laibach track.

They piggybacked on the whole 70s craze ('oooh flares and Spangles and 'X' rated films!'), lost a lot of what made them unique, and the result was a really disappointing record. Bummed still sounds absolutely triumphant to me - one of my very favourite albums. From this lot, I voted for the Inspirals. It's naff but beautiful, a kind of 'chippy anthem' which is easy to turn your nose up at, but there's something quite sincere and moving about it still.

I like the Charlatans's song the best.

I like the Charlatans's song the best. To my mind it's the one out of that bunch that had the biggest impact on this side of the Atlantic. I had several friends that were into this kind of stuff and that one is definitely one that I heard a lot.

I love the first 3 very much, though 'TOOIK' would be my pick most days. Very close to my heart. The other 2 are fine as well to be fair, just not as good for me.

"Step On" is the most indicative of the scene, but I like the Charlatans track a bit more (And them as a band overall)

There are similarities sure, particularly the organ sound, but 'TOOIK' has a different energy and feel for me, more low-key trippy stoned than the franticness of 'Hush'.

I went to University in Manchester 84-88 and then moved away. I went back in 89 for a visit and I couldn't believe my eyes - people were walking around Chorlton wearing flares. In daylight. Willingly. Possibly even enthusiastically.
It seemed incomprehensible that we had fought the Flare wars only for them to pop up again in the late 80s.

It never really caught on in London.
