I guess it's indicative of that mid-80s pop era in some respects, but Idol didn't really make any other records like this did he? Perhaps he did - I'm not in a mind to listen to them.
ANYWAY - I've got a real soft spot for it - maybe it's the drum machine claps, the harp-like guitar and the vague nods to some misty eyed French film-making.

I like it, it's a good guitar tune, good driving song, Steve Stevens doing his thing. I don't know if I'd call it idiosyncratic, when you had true weirdoes like Skafish, Klaus Nomi, Lene Lovich, Nina Hagen, etc., doing their thang.

It's a unique record/song. Probably the one Billy Idol song that I'll always summon a cheer for.
Lots to love about it - the digressive bridge, the backing vocals, the fact that he keeps the lead vocal in a baritone register throughout. It wouldn't work on paper, but here we are.

I like its mood, but i'm with G, it's no 'WW'. I'd probably take 'Dancing With Myself' and 'Rebel Yell' over it most days too.

I think in the postpunk thread several months back it really stood out that the US really excelled at musical weirdoes, whereas the UK had a great postpunk neopysch/angular sound.

I personally didn't have much time for them, but definitely on the quirky side. I worked at a record store with a guy who loved the band, which was weird because he was a metal/hard rock guy. That Danny Elfman is rich as fuck making soundtracks always astounds me.

I like the whole ‘Rebel Yell’ album. ‘Do not Stand in the Shadows’, ‘Catch My Fall’ and ‘Blue Highway’ were personal faves. Steven’s guitar playing was excellent.
WW and RY suffer from over exposure. I read his autobiography last year. A mixture of humility and braggadocio. A good read.

I saw him at an outdoor stage with grass seating here in Brisvegas in January this year, and was pleased that he could still sing really well. There were a few thousand people there, and the sound was good, so it was a fun nostalgic night. Steve Stevens was in the band too, and got a lot of the spotlight; Billy kept pumping him up and giving him plenty of credit for his songwriting contributions to Idol's career.
It did make me laugh when i realised that each song was stretched out to at least 7-8 minutes; I don't think they played more than about a baker's dozen of tunes, and that included a couple of covers like "LA Woman". But by the end they'd hit all the biggest songs of his peak as well as one or 2 more recent ones, so job admirably done by the Idol crew.
