Our house is too small for us to really go to town with interior design - and we have a small son who likes practising gymnastics where possible, so it all has to be quite considered.
I'm looking forward to laying new flooring and putting a new kitchen in, so we'll make an attempt of sorts to bring it up to a nice standard. We painted our living room "hague blue" and the addition of greens, pinks and yellows on fittings and cushions etc does really bring it out. The carpet in there needs to come out and then it'll be complete.

Lots of nice stuff, just remember if you get married or move in with someone, (an immutable law of the universe) the guy's stuff has a way of getting moved to the basement/attic/garage Or sold. Or burnt. Burnt works. Well, not for Rayge's stuff which is generally very nice.

Personally, I'd consider the style of the house. Then I'd try to get some kind of theme or at least harmony in the room, not having a jagged mismatch of styles and colours. It doesn't have to be showroom perfect, just not jarring, just not a pile of stuff which, on their own may be great but all together is a mess.
Think about space, what you want (how much seating, storage, tables, anything else), think about what you've got already and how a theme may emerge see what else you have or can get that's functional and will fit.

Could people please tell me where they got their SOFAS?
I'm having real trouble finding something that is a fair price and from a company that doesn't have bad reviews.

All the big companies - DFS and all the clowns who advertise on TV are expensive and/or pretty useless. You would be much better off getting it/them second hand when the shops/markets kick back in. All the sofas I ever bought - two red leather Chesterfields, a couple of cheap and cheerful suites – were obtained this way.

I'll think about it. Thanks. Maybe Goat Boy's got an old one he can sell you. I'm sure it's very hygenic.

I'm not huge on secondhand sofas but if you buy good quality ones, thoroughly clean them (and clean them regularly) and use throws on them they should be OK. We don't cover the chesterfields but they've been thoroughly cleaned a few times and the leather looked after, and generally cleaned and maintained. The cloth chairs have covers, they're cleaned under the covers, the covers washed and also throws on them, it's fine.
And it's excellent furniture. Not like that crap you get from ikea or dfs.
But yes I understand how you may not want secondhand sofas.
You can get some top furniture in the right auction through.

I'd probably be happy with any wooden/leather furniture bought used, but anything with fabric? not a good idea, I don't think. They start to smell, the colours fade, the foam/feathers flatten over time. I'm probably going for an upholstered sofa, so I think new is the way to go. I take absolutely fucking ages over choosing stuff online, so I tend to make good choices. But don't you really need to see and sit down in the sofa before buying? That would make sense, but it's impossible right now. And the sofas I've got my eye on cost a grand or more. And delivery isn't straightforward. www.swooneditions.com/verano-three-seater-sofa#!39711

Test driving a sofa is a good thing. If it is fabric, scotch guard the crap out of it. I'm pretty messy and my 17 year-old son is 3x as bad as me. That's why I have old lady covers on them even though I have scotch guarded them. If you can afford it, leather or something similar is good. They can crack, but they're much easier to clean.
I had a younger co-worker tell me he was going to buy a car and asked my advice. Having had two kids, I told him to get leather seats because with all the spilt milk and dropped food in the child seats, fabric started smelling like crap.
