DESPITE its subject matter and DESPITE the list of wankers taking part (Bono, Sting, Jools Holland, Shaar Murray) I reckon this could be interesting. BBC Two tonight. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000jjr5

It's like they made a documentary about one of the truly great rock bands - The Clash or The Stones, say - and they've edited the audio and inserted 'The Boomtown Rats' every time the band is mentioned. There can be no other explanation for what's going on here.

I can imagine the conversation between the producer and Charles Shaar Murray. " We'd like you to appear in our documentary on The Boomtown Rats, we need a noted journalist like you to offer some critical perspective". " Fuck off! They were rubbish". "Well just a few soundbites. And Geldof will pay five grand". " Five grand you say......Mary of the Fourth Form was a wild cry from the vortex! The most powerful expression of the Dublin blues I've ever heard!"

That's what you got!
Sinead O'Connor: 'I'm racking my brains and....no, I can't think of a better band than The Boomtown Rats'
Incredible. I'm actually kind of angry.

"And Geldof will pay five grand" Unlikely. For decades, he didn't pay the rest of the band money they were due. I think he's made some payment since though.

I had to laugh watching this if i'm being honest. The program tried to make them out to be one of the biggest ever, geldof came bringing up big band names in terms of competing with them in the charts. The thing is, they were the same as all the other bands competing with the clash. I wouldn't even put them in the same breath never mind sentence. Hilarious to be honest.

They were weirdly huge though - it seemed every kid in my class bought 'Tonic for the Troops' (not me though) and Geldof was never out of the papers - but it only lasted about a year. They went from being really big to being totally forgotten in a remarkably short period of time. In fact I can't think of another band whose career declined so quickly.
I think they really benefited from appearing at the arse end of punk. They got the kids who wanted to dip their toes into punk but were too scared or young to buy the real thing. The Police benefited in the same way, but there was more natural talent in that band, so they were able to build a career from that initial window of opportunity.

Yeah - 'Rat Trap' and 'I Don't Like Mondays' were released only months apart and were the only two number ones they had. They released a load of number twos all over the UK charts too

I'll give you that they were big for a short time, the program and geldof tried to make them sound like they were great, influential and like the other bands geldof kept name dropping, they just weren't. It screamed delusions of grandeur.Like loud intense screams for attention.

I was merely saying how strange it was that they were briefly so huge and then pretty much disappeared as their fanbase lost interest in them.

Good first album - I'm using Tonic for the Troops as their first Okay, bordering on good, second album Shitty third album Shitty fourth album Good fifth album, but it was too late.
It's interesting to see reactions on the Boomtown Rats, who had much larger visibility in the UK vs. the US. I liked Tonic for the Troops, but I was the exception. Most people didn't hear about them until I Don't Like Mondays, and might have bought the single, but probably not. They are barely a one hit wonder here.
