Eliza Orlins, a public defender who is running for Manhattan district attorney, said 911 calls had led to some of her clients being held in jail, where being locked up for even a day can produce devastating results. People can lose jobs, homes or custody of their children while they sit in jail on unproven charges, she said.
“This isn’t this one woman or this unique thing — this is a systemwide problem,” she said. “I think it’s chilling when you listen to just the audio of her 911 call, and you think about how credibly someone like her would present in court. There are so many consequences.”
Police officers arrived a short time after the 911 call but did not issue any summonses or make arrests. Online outrage focused on what could have happened and who would have been believed without the video. Ms. Cooper, who publicly apologized on Tuesday, was later terminated from her job at Franklin Templeton, an investment firm.
“Videos paint a story inside of a culture where a lot of the public has been trained and encouraged to not believe black people,” said Rashad Robinson, president of Color of Change, the nation’s largest online racial justice organization. Definitely, it can be an unraveling thing there too My 17 year-old son has an arrest on his record now. His sister, mom and I have told him that if the cops stop him for anything, find that, there are no more questions, and more than likely he goes right to jail. I don't know if he appreciates having a record, but it can take years to be expunged from his record. He's lucky the county gave him a counseling option. But it's not just described above. Every job application asks if you've ever been convicted of a crime. How many of those folks get the job they're applying for? (sorry, to hear your son has had some trouble) Good point, in some ways we have become gentler and others weirdly punitive. We ask the police to possibly weigh in/mediate on issues they really aren't made for, at the same time stuff the cops would warn you/ or people would work out before cops got involved now they are called immediately. Possibly because we don't trust/know each other anymore, but things seem to accelerate fast nowadays. And cops seem to be good at being punitive, but not always having mediation skills. In stead of criminology degrees and tons of shooting practice, I would love to see more social work, psychology degrees, etc., we need people skills, less military skills.

My son was lucky to be white. I don't know if this would have happened if he were Hispanic or Black. I also came to the meeting with the school cop dressed in my office professional gear and know how to talk the talk. That helped too, I'm sure.

We have another one. Apparently, hte young black men using they gym were fellow tenants in office building.
Happened in Minneapolis, where they had riots last night after the strangulation death of Floyd George by police.

And this is going viral today. It's sad to see a young man like this feeling that way.

Frankly, I don't know how Black Americans have the patience.

Okay, the new Karen thing is walking into retail outlets and saying they don't have to wear a mask because of their health conditions. If your health was so bad, why are you out and about with people in stores?

The Orwellian nature of the guy doing the surveilling is NOT good.
"Hey this person isnt conforming."
"Let's shame them into oblivion and I'll also get some subscribers".
The performative nature of this sort of thing is extremely unpleasant.

The performative nature of this sort of thing is extremely unpleasant. Yeah I have to agree. I don't think it applies to the clip at the beginning of the thread because she was threatening to trump (see what I did there) up false charges against him, so filming was a way of protecting himself, but certainly some of the videos I've seen have a big element of what you describe. I'd also add the whole Karen meme has a real misogynistic undertow to it.

That said, it’s all fine and dandy being non conformist but it’snot really a good time to make such statements when putting otherpeople’s health at risk.

Yes I'd agree that neither side is defensible. The general culture of filming people for this sort of thing is not acceptable though.

I'm torn. One of the mantras of the BLM movement is that police have always been doing this, except now people can film 'em.
I kinda think the same about these "Karen" videos. I don't think people go around looking for "Karens" to upset. I'd be surprised if they did. It's just that young people are very used to filming themselves and everything these days and "Karens" just seem to be the subject that get captured.
Thank god, these young people haven't taken to record stores so we don't have to watch Toby or G's record buying habits.
Yet. That's when I go off the grid.

Call me old fashioned but I don't think such racial epithets are helpful.

The youtube vid of G being filmed spending 500 quid on acid jazz purchases in some record shop in soho currently has over a million views. The comments are hilarious!

I posted one of these on Facebook and an elementary school friend of mine named, "Karen," commented that she disliked the term. Maybe some outdated name would be better, like Ethyl or Miriam or Jehosaphat would be better.
