It turns out that I don't really care about anything I say I care about! I'm just trying to make myself look better. I know this because my moral superiors are giving themselves rhetorical medals for their brutal HONESTY. it must be true, what they say about me, since their defining characteristic is their True Blue Honesty!!!
saracasm over. won't you vote in my stupid poll?

I loved the video that was going around yesterday of a woman in LA. She's passenger in car that pulls up to curb next to a guy boarding up a store in case of riots. She picks up electric screwdriver and the driver, a guy, gets out, takes a photo. She drops tool and they get back into car and drive off.
They've got you beat by a long shot in virtue signalling. You are an amateur compared to them.

Like a lot of things, there's a modicum of truth in this observation. Just as in white privilege there's a modicum of truth in that observation of behaviour, there's no doubt that virtue signalling is a thing too. Social media has certainly amplified it.
Spotify went on the bandwagon and pushed "Black Lives Matter" on their website. No other details than saying "we're down with this thing". I suspect they saw it as an opportunity to demonstrate that they were down with the kids.
Now, Bandcamp said that they would donate all profits on the 19th June to a particular charity. That's actually doing what you're saying. That's action.
I think it's a certain human reflex given that our moral direction in the West doesn't have the same sort of powerful compass that the Church provided. We live in exceptionally complex times and people will adhere to causes and narratives.

even if you don't think the podcasting program is productive - there's this:
that counts for something, I think. Saying "they are just trying to show they are down with the kids" involves mind reading. IMO most people who invoke "virtue signalling" are engaging in this.
what a luxury to tell someone you disagree with what their true motives are. I vote Horse Shit!

What do you think of this 'blackout' business today? 95% of people I follow on Instagram have just posted plain black squares to show solidarity.

In my experience, people who donate to charity and actually go out and make a difference help out in a generally philanthropic manner don't make a song and dance about it.
You don't see people posting on Facebook saying "YEAH I JUST DONATED £100 TO WATER AID"

I think the most religious people keep pretty quiet about it. Not every religious person does keep quiet about it. maybe they just want to show they are down with the kids.

maybe. remember when people were dumping water on their heads and donating money for something or another? I think it's something like that. you give somebody a dollar for the wrong reason and they still have a dollar. I don't really see the down side of something like that. in fact, I think in cases of diversity and sexual orientation that the stupid futile gesture of support can lead to other types of support. not always but sometimes or in the long haul.

I don't have any virtues to signal, and I'm somewhat baffled by the phenomenon. As you may have noticed, I'm not one to care overmuch what people who don't know me think of me, and I can't be arsed with false modesty or simpering. But I don't get particularly animated about other people doing it.
It's a form of sentimentality isn't it?

I think it's about wanting to belong, there's often a sheep like aspect to social media behaviour, looking for affirmation from your peers. In answer to Snee, Is it harmless? In the main probably. I guess the danger is it encourages superficial responses rather than actively seek change.
