I still say this is as good as any of Wire's first three albums. The production is better, too. Post-punk at it's sharpest.

Arguably her greatest album, Josephine's strangely ancient-sounding mannered vocals coupled with the stark strangeness of the acoustic instrumentation make this sound like a cleaned-up long lost recording of a 1920s religious cult leader. Beautiful.

Neo folk ( whatever that is) as someone said , if you have black and white dreams of a lost and better world this is for you. Songs of Yearning is the fourth RAIJ album and perhaps their most coherent single body of work to date. An enticing combination of eastern religious sounds and iconography, acoustic and electric instrumentation, and lilting, meditative vocals, Songs of Yearning features pieces in no fewer than six different languages: Greek, French, English, Latin, a Finnish dialect of Swedish, and Russian. Stark and beautiful.

Um, yeah!!! Just found out that they had reformed. I've not heard that name in years, I'm sure I've got some CDRs of theirs floating around somewhere. I think I might spend the afternoon catching up on their back catalogue.

On band camp fishy. If it didn't guarantee that it would be ruined by the time it arrived I would have ordered a copy.

Does this make you curious about Bessie Smith, Ethel Waters, etc., Not so much, because generally what I've heard of that era doesn't really appeal too much to me, and I wouldn't necessarily see a direct link from Josephine's odd folk and the jazz and blues-based songs of Bessie or Ethel. I'm happy to give anything a go though, and be proved wrong, if you think I should see a link [/hint].

All new to me. Any favourites there? I'm more tempted by the eastern and african stuff than the American, to be honest, but I'll dip my toe into those waters, too.

I love the Secret Museum of Mankind, world musics of that era. (the band camp account is a hip hop group that has no connection to the series) www.discogs.com/label/319027-The-Secret-Museum-of-Mankind
