But if you've never fought before, how do you know you've got it in you to throw a good hard punch? Is it one of the primal instincts? You don't. It's either in you or it isn't. I was never a particularly good fighter, though could look after myself if pushed in a corner, because I didn't have that natural aggression. I was almost too conscious of the process thinking 'I'm in a fight here", whereas the kids who were feared, who weren't always the strongest and biggest, would lose it completely and had absolutely no barriers at all on how far they'd go in hurting the other guy.

When I went clubbing, it was always the small bouncers you worried about. They were the ones you knew were properly hard.

The amount of bruisers carrying knives these days makes punching technique sort of redundant.

Or with Coan, fall songs played full blast from his walkman.

Being in a fight is a lot like playing sports. You need to get a couple under your belt.
The first ones, you shake from the adrenalin, but after a couple, you still shake, and then you calm down.
The first times your in a game, you try too hard from the adrenalin and shoot it over the backboard or swing at a pitch as soon as it leaves the pitcher's hand. You learn to control your emotions after a couple.
That's why having a little brother is good. You learn to channel your emotions in a fight.

I always worry about just how angry i would get in a fight. I've never properly lost my temper but I'm afraid to. I would just go pure berserker style. There's signs when i lose the plot over something small, that i go OTT. I might not win the fight but i think I'd be one of those people who wouldn't know when to stop even when losing. Unless i got knocked out, then yeah, i wouldn't have a choice to stop.

My dad used to tell me that if I punched bullies they'd leave me alone. I wish I wasn't too timid to follow his advice.
It's astounding the amount of people who haven't been in a fight here, just seems unfathomable to me that people haven't got themselves in that situation. Of course I didn't ask to be bullied, I just assumed everyone's experienced similar at least a little bit.

Generational perhaps, people were allowed to be meaner, bully more back in the day, now there is greater awareness, interventions, more punishments for everybody even the victim (possibly hence the US' problem with school shootings).

Of course I didn't ask to be bullied, I just assumed everyone's experienced similar at least a little bit. I found myself in a few stupid situations in grade school, along the lines of somebody saying "Hey Charlie... you think you could beat up _______ over there?" Well, I'm nine years old or whatever, what am I gonna say? Then it's "Hey _____, Charlie says he can beat you up!" "Oh YEAH?" One way or another I always managed to wriggle out of those situations, or a teacher would break it up before anyone got really hurt. On one of those occasions, when asked the question, I was smart enough to say "No, probably not." To my amazement this went down well - I didn't even get teased about it. I think they were actually impressed!

It depends where you grow up I think. It's still pretty rife in many UK schools. There's less street fighting now though probably because you can easily get knifed. Back in the day getting into fights was the weekend entertainment for a lot of teenagers.

As I mentioned on BCB a long time ago ... in fact it might even have been on the old Q board it was that long ago ... I have a conviction for assault. I was 18 at the time and it was from an incident at a 21st birthday party that got pretty seriously out of hand. I was drunk and one of four people who ended up in court from the incident. It was my first (and only) offence and I pleaded guilty straight away and got off with a fine and a suspended sentence which expired a long time ago. It's not something I am in any way proud of and I've steered clear of any trouble since.
