I think Americans generally are more forgiving of stars making commercials.
But my reference to 'whoring out' in the initial post of this thread was to the bodies of work.
De Niro's Fokkers and Grandpa films, not to mention his involvement with the 'We Will Rock You' musical - ug!

De Niro's lethargic, comatose performance in The Irishman was genuinely sad to behold. Carry a film? He looked like he'd struggle to carry a bag of potatoes. I watched that the other night. I read it as acting; the character was subservient to Pacino and Pesci's characters and those lumpen moments came when he was processing stuff*. I actually thought the lead three actors did a great job. *And it wouldn't have been his place to argue or suggest. I read appropriate restraint of the character in those moments, thought I could see that the guy wanted to say or do stuff but judged better.

Pacino's early arc was more stupendous and DeNiro doing some dumb comedies doesn't help. It reminds me of seeing Robt. Mitchum in some dumb comedies he did, but I'll take DeNiro over Pacino. Pacino is too over the top for me at times.

There must be some deep rooted thing that makes DeNiro keep trying to do comedy. Maybe it's a ego thing that it's one genre he wants to do well in. His latest show i think is him playing a grandfather moving in to his kids house, and taking over his grandson's room. The grandson ain't happy so a back and forth prank war starts. He just should have quit comedy after the fockers.

Has De Niro got money problems or something. He's in so many crappy adverts on British TV.

Yeah, it's embarrassing. Him and Keitel.
I mean, up to a point I don't mind it. But it has to damage their standing after a while.

yeah, DeNiro straight up said that he lost a lot of his money not too long ago. Shit, I think he's always had a flair for comedies ever since his DePalma Days.

I figured it was his stake in Nobu. Not a good time to be a restaurant investor. Or hotel. But, I blame his financial manager. I'm sure athletes and movie stars have their glamour projects they like to dabble in, but a manager should diversify his money so he'd never be in position like this. I have a buddy who was an actor and in between jobs he worked for a financial company whose clients included Jack Nicholson and Los Angeles Lakers, among others. Nicholson was the first star to take points on a movie, or revenue, including salary, for Batman. My buddy said he'd see checks of $1 million received for Nicholson for weeks. Of course, some of that money was also going to women whose babies they'd had with him and not many know about. These guys get around.

He came from a very bohemian background, his father was a painter in The Village. You'd expect him not to be so money obsessed, but obviously he is.
