There have been some Australian bands I've really, really liked through the years, like AC/DC and Mental As Anything, but the overall quality seems pretty erratic to me. I've read how lots of Australian bands are forged in hard drinking bars, but I haven't really heard any hard rockin' bands that I've liked. The Angels? Rose Tattoo? Midnight Oil? Cold Chisel? Johnny Diesel and the Injectors? That I've liked being the active phrase. I've heard all those bands and they haven't done much for me. I like the punkier and garage bands, like The Saints, Radio Birdman, etc.

and this Oh god that. I was glad for them that they had a UK hit. Greedy the keyboard player died of a massive heart attack last year They would start their sets with Booker T & The MGs Time Is Tight which I always enjoyed. This is better

The Avalanches Since I Left You could be easily in my top 20 of the last 20 years. My son also loves Cat Empire, I have heard some and don't dislike them, maybe I should give them a try.

That's more like it. One of Australia's greatest live bands, and one of Aust. best pop/rock songwriters.

I supppose I shouldn't be surprised given the shellacking some of their tracks got in a cup in the other place a while back, but the fact that my favourite Aussie band – in fact they'd probably be in my top ten bands from anywhere, if I were ever to attempt such a futile thing – hasn't even be mentioned yet, does make me wonder about the company I'm keeping... Two Heads, when I was a Postcard collector, was the first thing I heard, but then came Cattle and Cane - a thing of wonder – and I was totally sold to the extent that I bought every dammn thing up to the break-up, and then after the reunion up to Grant's death... on a whim, I listened to Spring Hill Fair a few days ago, a whole album, my first this year I'm sure. It truly is a beautiful thing, some great songs (and none less than good) from two great, but different, songwriters, lyrics, melodies, harmonies, performances, production. I don't see how anyone who professes to love the Bea*les can dismiss them.

The Beatles weren't just about great songwriting though, they were also about sonic invention and unpredictability. It's those latter qualities that are missing from The Go Betweens. Like you I was bowled over by 'Cattle and Cane' and liked them enough to buy a couple of albums back in the day. But while the albums made for pleasant listening, they never really excited me. It was all a little too tasteful and middle of the road.
