The third Elevators studio album. The one they don't talk about.
Why?
Sounds "of a piece" with the others - "Never Another" is almost the prototype.
Was 'heaviness' taking over? Did it sound dated? That's the only thing I can think. But surely its reputation should have been restored by now?

Not in my opinion.
There are some good songs here, for sure, but the band is falling apart before your very ears, the horn charts are stupid and obtrusive, and Stacy - brilliant though he was - simply wasn't ready to take over frontman (or lyricist) duties.
Is it unlistenable? No. But it's a very far cry from the ambition and intense focus of the previous two.

On the other hand...
I just found out about this - put together by Paul Drummond, author of the astonishing Eye Mind, and available for about $30 from Amazon US:

There isn't an absolute barnstormer like 'Slip Inside This House' or 'Splash 1' but I still love it. Love the guitar tones, the odd, dark mood is all over it, and there are some great tunes.

It's well wonky and has some good moments, but other than being a record of their inevitable decline, has little value.

Always found it a bit limp as an album, but I love 'Livin' On'. Great vocal from Rocky and the horns are cool.

Oddly enough, this song from the same (early) sessions was on my mind yesterday at this time. How did this not make it onto the album?

I don't know. The Charly 2-CD I've got has a kind of 'alternate album' on disc one that features that one and is superior to the original release.

It's a bit all over the shop in terms of song consistency, but for the most part it sounds wonderful.
