He was hugely prolific, yet all I'm seeing on my Facebook is 'Theme from The Good, The Bad and The Ugly'. Which is a wonderful, unique piece of music, but...
I watched the Venice concert on TV with my Mam a few years ago, and we were both absolutely swept away, shouting, tears, the lot. That's a nice memory.
RIP.

I spent three or four days staying with my Dad the summer the theme from "For a Few Dollars More" was all over the radio. my Dad let us run pretty wild as city kids did in those days. that tune seemed to be coming out of somebody's radio no matter where we went or what we were up to. the grunts and gunshots and whip-cracks added to the hypnotizing whistling melody of the thing.
so, I've loved his music longer than I've been a moviegoer. I see Leone movies in theaters when I get the chance and the music is one of the things that make those movies long lasting meals that make you feel full for hours after you watch them.
When I saw Brian DePalma's "Untouchables" in the theater I got caught up in clapping along at the names we all recognized in the opening credits. Me and the guy next to me were the only ones to clap at Morricone's name when it appeared on the screen. When the lights came up at the end we regarded each other for a moment. we'd never met and didn't really speak but we knew we both appreciated one particular aspect of the movie we had just seen. it was a nice feeling.
that's sort of how it is when craftspeople die. if you say Morricone died and somebody said who? and then you whistled that little bit from "the Good the Bad & the Ugly" they might have some idea who he was. I enjoyed seeing people post pictures of their favorites of his soundtracks on social media yesterday. it was the same sort of feeling as clapping at his name with somebody else who found that name as familiar and exciting as those names everybody else was clapping for.
I was glad he finally won an Academy Award but I can't whistle anything from "the hateful 8". maybe the next time I watch it I can.

I always enjoyed Zorn's reimagining of Morricone:

When I was working in a record store in the early '80s, we got one vinyl copy in a shipment of Morricone's movie themes. It never made it to the racks. I still have it.
