Having devoted a lifetime experience and five minutes of thought, here are my favourite UK number ones of all time..
1. I Heard It Through the Grapevine - Marvin Gaye 2. I Feel Love - Donna Summer 3. Atomic- Blondie 4. Going Underground - The Jam 5. Are Friends 'Electric'? - Tubeway Army
Honourable mentions to Good Vibrations, Firestarter, Ticket to Ride..
I'll be back to give my justifications for these choices. Meanwhile, feel free to debate the choices and add your own.

1. Why Do Fools Fall in Love - Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers 2. Let's Get it On - Marvin Gaye 3. Good Vibrations - Beach Boys 4&5. Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields - Beatles
Honorable mention to Going Underground/Dreams of Children (mainly for the B-side), Grapevine, I Get Around, and most other Beatles singles.

Can someone list them all, and I'll get back to you?

Im not going to post yet because theres an absolute heap of reading to do, but its great to see some of the outliers the Australian charts throw up. Didn't know Devo spent 3 weeks at #1 on our singles chart with their live EP!

Five? Fuck that, here's twenty from the time I actually cared/knew what was number one. 1 You've Lost That Loving Feeling 2 See My Baby Jive 3 He's a Rebel 4 Great Balls of Fire 5 Shaking All Over
Blue Moon (Marcels) Monster Mash Cathy's Clown Lightning Strikes Jailhouse Rock Surf City Good Vibrations My Prayer If You Wanna Be Happy Quarter to Three Monday Monday Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves My Boyfriend's Back Daydream Believer Runaway No Future (they wuz robbed)
And it could have been 50. I collected US number ones in the early to mid sixties (although I balked at Bobby Vinton, the Singing Nun and fucking Sukiyaki) - more from Elvis and the Everlys, the Four Seasons, Jimmy Gilmer & the Fireballs, Dion, the Marvelettes, the Supremes, Mary Wells, the Temptations, Marvin, the Byrds, Nino Tempo & April Stevens, the Shirelles, the Teenagers, the Penguins. Of course it all turned to shit in 70s, well, in 68 or so.

I appreciate five is tough, but it creates more personalized lists rather than seeing long lists from everyone with the same songs.

I appreciate five is tough, but it creates more personalized lists rather than seeing long lists from everyone with the same songs. It should be a top 5 from each decade, that'll stretch yers! I'll be doing something along those lines, because it's more interesting than just 5 of all time.
