For my part, I had no idea Mitch Margo was only 14 at the time!

Personally I wouldn't put either of those last two entries in this category. There's a lot going on in both of them. I'm struggling to think of one I would put here. Israelites isn't much of a song, it's all about that vocal performance (and possibly the backing vocals). Dekker had stronger songs, but none with that kind of performance. I'd agree with that and also include "Fu Manchu" as another one where his warped and rather odd falsetto really makes the track. I mean the rhythm on that song is barely there at all, it's carried by the voice. Gregory Isaacs is another example of someone who could take potentially unpromising material and turn it into gold. "Night Nurse" is of course the apex of his craft- the simple, synthesised backdrop just gives him room to croon in this really possessive, almost scary way.

That Bad Girl record is absolutely fucking tree-mendous btw It's a stunner, isn't it? Something that really stops you in your tracks. Haven't heard anything else new (to me) this year that's knocked me out quite like it.

Good to know you noticed #pearlsbeforeswinedearboys

Got to say first up that I don't 'get' this thread, and the tracks chosen so far don't help. We're required to find a nothing song with a not exceptional instrumental performance and arrangement and unobtrusive production that has a fabulous vocal, yes? Well, on one level that's impossible for me, because I just can't separate the elements of a record like that and judge them individually, and candidates can be knocked out by a single lyriacal line, a six-second sax solo or similar: and on another, prompted by fearless freap's take above, includes most doo wop classics, as well a fair bit of early proper soul music and all kinds of jazz, blues and Americana, not to mention virtually the entire recorded output of stylists such as, to pull a few extremely random names out of a hat because I've been reminded of them recently, Timi Yuro, Roy Orbison, John Lydon, Hazil Adkins or Diamanda Galas, but here's some vocal performances I've loved for decades, without judging any of the other factors
Will this do?
