So the drum sound on In the Air Tonight is quite big. Who knew?
Is he a big influence on hip-hop production? Genuinely would be interested if Phil's drums were used anywhere in a classic track. I mean, I know he was supposedly a really good drummer (never heard anything particularly outstanding from him myself), but that's not the crisp kinda beat that hip-hop is usually built around. Can I get an amen?

His records as pop records crossed over into the black audience. In fact, his support has been enduring within the urban listening demographic, whereas for most white rock/pop listeners he's an ironic joke ala as equally successful acts such as Billy Joel, Chicago, etc., |

Those 'people react to music' things are all over youtube. It's cheap clicks and an opportunity for people to 'be dramatic on popular media'. Utter crap, in other words.
As for the song ... I've said this before - it was Clive Davis who told Collins to put a big powerful drum sound in there, the song originally didn't have it.

Mind you Phil might have been influenced by hip hop. I once heard him say - and I swear I'm not making this up - that that creepy "he he he" thing he does in 'Mama' came from hearing Grandmaster Flash "The Message"!
