Yeah i don't reall buy that argument that some times springs up where people say, (I'll use the beatles as an example) you can't hear the beatles in slayer's music, but slayer sites Bowie as an fluence who was influenced by the beatles, so therefore, ergo, vis a vis, slayer are influenced by the beatles. But that's a different debate. Anyway is your point that even though page was an immoral magpie of music he's still influential whether i see skill or not in his playing? Separate from the talent, rock and roll is full of rotten people doing rotten things to each other and others. But you were concerned with seeing direct influence of one artist to another, not morality. You also have to face the facts that direct influence would be aping. People see through it, hence the backlash at Great Van Fleet, and much influence is aspirational. Many times those being influenced are at at the level of their heroes, Smashing Pumpkins are third tier in their musician abilities at best, and Zep are first in their abilities.

Corgan and Chamberlain are 3rd tier in their abilities? don't know if i'd put that them low. Corgan is a very underrated guitar player, and Chamberlain is one of the best around. All IMHO of course.

They don't process many outside influences (country, folk, avant garde, blues, rai, etc.,). They haven't grown that much since their arrival, still tended to trammel/rush any groove, sense of dynamics is limited, can't long form solo, etc., Don't worry Beatles, Stones, etc., are only second tier.

Neither are that high on my list although Fun House and Raw Power are epic. So I'll say the Stooges Led Zep just aren't my cup of tea since the mid 70's when I would have taken them over The Stooges.
