I don't see this as a particularly bad thing. It probably is needed because a lot of people don't understand context, particularly younger watchers.

Classic novels are usually given an introduction outlining the context of the time, the politics and themes, the writer's motivations, a chronology of events around it, Yadda yadda. What's the difference?

What's the difference? That's all fine I think - albeit unnecessary to the informed reader. What I really hate are these censored versions of, for instance, Mark Twain books.

I think this quote says a lot about this issue:
“It wasn’t that they didn’t have the courage to teach it, it just took too long to explain the etymology of the N‑word, and how Twain was dedicated to the realist movement, and thereby he felt he had to accurately display the language of uneducated boys and adults in the 1830s,” Gribben said. "

But there’s probably an opportunity to cost time-wise to doing so. Plus - school administrators might not always be supportive.
