It's a one chord drone with some tape effects thrown in. Sounds shit.
It's just the most extraordinary sounding record. I'd use the word "soundscape" but I don't wanna sound like a wanka. G used the word "exciting" the other day to describe JAMC but this to me is one of the most exciting records ever made. Those tape loops still sound like nothing else in rock. That backwards guitar solo is as out there as free jazz. That fucking bassline is just relentless, so hypnotically powerful. Even the drums have a cosmic weight to them that feels like they were channelling something transcendentally Other.
Lots of bands from that period made "psychedelic" masterpieces and went out there but this still feels like the rock equivalent of fucking Voyager or summat. A trip to the stars and beyond in under 3 minutes.
Did I mention that fucking piano at the end? Christ, I'm exhausted just writing about it.

Detroit techno is framed in a dance floor context - it is primarily functional music with a specific aim. TNK is a marvel- don't get me wrong - but as a song it is a bit of a dirge once you strip away the studio veneer. In comparison to other compositions by them, it suffers. I see its goals as something similar though. It's a desire for the transcendent. To lose yourself in the void. Or something I'll shut up now (I've had a few beers)

You could make a COMPILATION of tracks from various bands 1966 - 1968 and it would be as good as The White Album.

I never thought Toby would turn into a "for music to be real, it has to be played on an acoustic guitar" type. Has he read a Roger Scrutton essay on it or something? I don't believe he believes his own argument here, the "studio veneer" (as he dismissively calls it) is the whole point of why it's so extraordinary.

Well, if you were to compare it to, say, Good Vibrations, which also has an enormous amount of studio veneer, or A Day in the Life, then it becomes clear that it isn't much of a song.
I'm being deliberately provocative, but my feeling is that its an achievement of sorts rather than a great song on its own merits.

I understand what he's trying to say, but he's fallen into the trap of criticising a record not for what it is but for what it isn't, like criticising Strawberry Fields as a bad record to dance to. Clearly Lennon never intended to write a conventional pop song, but rather an Eastern style drone, so he deliberately eschewed the kind of melodic shifts that would normally appear in his songs.

I don't think it's rude. I'm addressing your argument, not you personally. The point I'm trying to make is your argument is criticising the track for what it isn't rather than for what it is. It's a common fallacy whenever we talk about any kind of cultural endeavour, we've all fallen into that particular trap at some point.
