You might have heard the odd thing on Peel or the earlier R1 shows (Janice Long or Kid Jensen) but they didn't necessarily hit you hard, you weren't necessarily listening intently. Of course you'd read about Marquee Moon ('brittle but fluid guitar lines' - what?!?) - didn't give you much of a clue.
It was an incredibly exciting time. It seems strange to me now, actually, the idea of getting hold of a piece of vinyl and you really had no idea what to expect. And the covers didn't necessarily help.
When this list was published in 1985 I remember ticking off 12 that I already owned (I guess all the Doors, Beatles, Roxy and Velvets albums). Over the next four or five years (my university years, basically) I got hold of another 20 or 30. At least half became big favourites. I miss those times.
The NME themselves accepted that the omission of Pepper was an odd one. The fact that Ziggy Stardust is also missing is close to inexplicable.

Remember the BCB poll where Ram came in at #9?
I love it, but...I think that was more due to the fact that we were talking about it a lot at the time. I do not buy on any level that we ever really rated it that high.
POB for me - more of a piece, a more "important" work in terms of establishing them as separate entities, no weak tracks (Ram has a few), etc.

I loved both dearly. I got "Ram" first. My Dear Sweet Mom who bought me records heard about "the f-word" on P.Ono Band. I still love both. the short version is that hearing "Plastic Ono Band" was an electrifying experience. A surprising amount of this "shock of the new" seems to be retained all these years later. that's about as brief as I can manage to be today. Pack a lunch for the Long version: I REALLY love "Ram" too. A great part of the reason is that everybody I knew asked to borrow it to listen to it. everybody I knew would return it with a sneer. Each and every one of them said "That was TERRIBLE!!!" (or words to that effect) I was perfectly happy to help somebody to save money on something they didn't like but every time I put it on I still loved it. I love it to this day. I don't think it's good as POB or I would have picked it. I do think it's damned good. Macca already had his "clean break" under his belt. Yeah Yeah, Lennon did too with Dirty Mac & shit but he didn't really CLOSE the iron door on the Beatles - not yet. well, POB is his stake through the Beatle's heart. I love "Mccartney" too but he's not bringing the fuckin' hammer down on that stake the way Lennon is. so with "Ram" I think he's going back and putting frosting on the cupcakes. "Plastic Ono Band" sounds like it was made by somebody who is done with the Beatles. IMO "Ram" sounds like somebody reminding us what he brought to the Beatles. "Ram" is still Christmas morning to the Beatles fan heart that still beats in my tired old chest.
"Plastic Ono Band" is a unique personal statement. on some level it seems like Lennon wants me to be guilty for being a Beatles fan. I guess on some level he convinced me. Some days it's still a hair-raising thing according to the hair I have left.

Apparently Unknown Pleasures is better than both Pet Sounds AND Kind of Blue. Best album in that list, by a mile. I might have Kind of Blue at no 2 from those.

GREAT post, Snee! so with "Ram" I think he's going back and putting frosting on the cupcakes. "Plastic Ono Band" sounds like it was made by somebody who is done with the Beatles. IMO "Ram" sounds like somebody reminding us what he brought to the Beatles. It has been suggested that Imagine is Lennon doing the same (though he can't help giving Paulie a few last kicks).

No 95 should have been a wee a bit higher. It certainly is in my top100.

To be honest, i believe UP is better than PS too. Never been a massive fan of the latter as an album; it has a handful of great tracks that have inflated its rep and place in history, imo.

I never held their opinion in such high regard to do something like that.

Top 100 "Of All Time"? Swordfishtrombones at number 6?? (It is a great album, but... really?) NME went very "Americana" that year. They were pushing bands like Los Lobos, Green on Red and The Long Ryders hard so Waits fitted in with all of that.

I used to make lists on PEN AND PAPER and travel to Aberdeen with a hundred quid + in my pocket and buy shit. I miss those moments.

For a second, I thought you might have been dismissing Pet Sounds out of hand (I do), and referring to Kind of Blue as having an inflated reputation. That nearly floored me.
