Long held as Wilson's masterpiece and one of the most important albums of all time, but has its reputation become over inflated over the years?

Are there proper ratings for things?
I mean - Pet Sounds is generally held to be either “the greatest album of all time” or one of them. When something is held up that highly, there is a lot more room to be overrated than under. So that’s the safe position to take.
But then you start comparing it to other albums and there really aren’t many in its league.

It doesn't have the same variety and some of its musical stylings and songwriting come across as distinctly old-fashioned, even quaint. It's highs are extremely high of course. It's an album that has masterpieces on it, but I've never been been convinced by it as a whole. It's a very good album, but not a great one in my view.

Overrated to the point of ridiculousness..Has interesting production flourishes and a couple of decent singles..For the most part, it's boring and one note
And yes, Unknown Pleasures is vastly superior to Pet Sounds..

Its quaintness - largely lyrical imo - is part of its appeal. I will say more obv.

Well - Revolver is another record that is often cited as “the greatest.” There’s a small handful of albums that rotate around that distinction. Which one you settle on is somewhat arbitrary. Basically - I don’t think it matters which one you pick. I probably prefer Pet Sounds of the two. More of a ‘statement’ album.

I don’t even think Unknown Pleaures is a particularly good album. Wouldn’t make my top 500.

They're both quite close for me. You could accuse both of being quite one note and occupying a narrow emotional terrain. PS's highs are higher though.

PS's highs are higher though. Unknown Pleasures depths are deeper.

It's not overrated. Just listen to 'Don't Talk...' for proof of that. Musically it's still astonishing, streets ahead of everything else, including Revolver. And the songs are much stronger, more 'for the ages'.

It is an excellent album, but over rated for mine. And i believe Revolver has much stronger songs.
