By definition, individual taste in anything is an expression of self/individuality, no? Well, an attack on someone's taste is an attack on them isn't it? Someone's taste and judgement is a sort of manifestation of what they are as a person. Musical taste is a cultivation of one's aesthetics and as such represents them, just as choice of clothes, hairstyle, politics and football team. I'm not interested in intellectualising this thing. A sense of decorum is all that's required, as you both well know. If you enter a discussion on Johnny Cash to say 'I think he's rubbish' and someone calls you a cunt, is that fair? Yet this is the sort of thing that happens regularly on social media and it's harmful. I seldom see that here. But, in principle with words like 'I thinks so and so is rubbish' is not really entering into a discussion.

It's expressing an opinion but it's not adding anything to the discussion, yeah.
And yes, it's something you don't see so much here. We don't have fragile but massive male egos like LMG and Matt Wilson who feel threatened by disagreement, that's why.

Wilson threatened to cut my head off!

I have learned a lot about music, about history, about the world, about people, and about myself. I'm not sure how much of what i've learned is actually true, but i feel good about what i think i know. The music i've listened to, the stuff i've written about it and most of the things connected to them have been a positive element in my life.

Yet this is the sort of thing that happens regularly on social media and it's harmful. Nothing like this has ever happened to me that I remember on social media. I thought you were referring to the 'you like (or dislike) someone so you have no taste and your oponion is worthless' gambit or the if s/he likes it, it must be shit school. Don't really engage with 'fair' by the way. It could certainly be considered rude or aggressive, but then again, so, to a lesser degree perhaps, would be my inserting a flat piece of negativity into a discussion. 'Fair' though, suggests a general consensus about the 'rules' and you won't find that in any open forum. About anything.

I think you're more likely to steer clear of any discussion where there's universal agreement - and you'd be wise to do so. I just get bugged when everyone's cheering something that I don't think is so great, and I might chime in to say just that. It never ends happily and I nearly always regret it. Ho hum.

What always staggered me is that the proggers on BCB can/could never elevate their like for music beyond a few sentences. It was if they were simply unable to articulate anything more profound about it.

and the PROG goons are the most sensitive to having their music taste criticised.

The reason I fell out with some of them was that they took one or more of my rants/kvetches about some of their favourites as a personal attack and responded in kind, albeit with, at most, the tenth of the wit and the wordage. Much as I generally hate to generalize, I'll make an exception here: SOME people that like prog, and only prog, do so because something is lacking in their make-up that also makes them likely to write less and to react more personally to essentialy non-personal remarks. Creative imagination, maybe? Lack of emotional fluency?

I've never really understood those posters who write one line about something. What's the point?

Among my group of friends since high school I have been "the man" regarding music. I compiled all the music for my 25th high school reunion because the organizers knew I put together a good compilation for the night. Besides sports, it's the main thing that brought us together and keep us together. Just this week, I messaged a group on my new album recommendations. I was pretty arrogant about my music knowledge until I found the mojo forum and realized I didn't know very much at all.
At JUs I don't really like discussing music very much. It gets boring pretty quickly for me. I'd rather find out something more about the person I'm talking to for the first time, or haven't seen in awhile. I already know what they think about music.
The funny thing is 75% of my job is writing and editing. Nothing fancy, but I've been doing it for 30 years so I should be okay at it. I don't consider myself very good expressing myself on paper about music. Not like Dougie, who I consider very good. Maybe it's that I feel too strongly about it. I find I'm a better writer when I'm sorta removed from the subject.
I"ve also had to always work with space limitations on a page and was educated in journalism. I wish I could be more eloquent about it, but I'm surprised how curt I look compared to other folks writing about music on BCB and here.
