So, I'm wondering if there are anymore examples of this kind of musician. Klaus is best known as the drummer who came up with the motorik beat. A fairly legendary drummer, surely? But he spent most of his career playing guitar, and didn't even the play the drums on all of Neu's tracks.
Are there any more examples of this, a musician who's a stand-out in their field, but largely didn't do what they're best known for?
Anyway, just because this is a music thread, here's Klaus with a better drummer, Jaki Liebezeit:

I would nominate Paul McCartney for his bass work: Get Back, TaxMan, Paper Back Writer, etc., He was a master of writing simple (6 string) guitaristic lines for (4 string) bass. But he is not a time master like Jamerson, splitting, dropping, adding subtracting, and his so called virtuosity disappears with Wings onward.

I thought he was primarily known for his bass work?

Yeah, he is/was, at least with the Beatles. I think that's what Punctuation was trying to say, maybe.

David Bowie's saxophone playing is as good as John Coltrane and Charlie Parker put together, yet, bizarrely, he is best known for his singing.

I thought he was primarily known for his bass work? Macca was as much a bassist as Dinger a drummer. Both were songwriters who played whatever to get the job done. Macca became a bassist the way most do, too many playing 6 strings and they needed someone to play 4. He wasn't born with the the thunk to funk.
