Yeah, I heard about it. I've only seen short clips.
I think the premise is very funny, there are a lot of potential jokes to be had from the set-up, but from reading the article it sounds like the writing was compromised.
There were precedents - Chaplin, Mel Brooks, Python - but arguably this went too far. But you know - if it's funny, it's funny, and fuck all the 'outcry'.

I don't remember hearing anything about it, but there is something intrinsically ridiculous about Hitler that will always feed comedy.

The whole idea sounds like sketch in a....well a sketch show. The writer's credits seem creditable after, working with Bremner etc. By the way, where's Bremner these days. I've always like him.

I don't think anyone ever saw it, I bet there were only 15 people in the country at the time with BSB squarials. I've seen clips in the past, that's all. I don't think the concept is inherently dreadful, but it does seem a bit thin, and very 1970s. I mean, why mock Hitler in this way (I don't mean 'give the man some respect...'), isn't the Till Death Us Do Part/Love Thy Neighbour attack on more realistic lower-level bigotry in the same format a better concept, even if both were flawed in execution.

shit, I would have watched it. it's either funny or it ain't. I remember before "Hogan's Heroes" came on - the grown ups were mortified! My wife was watching it the other day and it's hard to believe what a head softening experience it is. nobody is offended by Hogan's Heroes. I guess how it sounds is different from what it is. you ever see "Danger 5"?
I enjoyed Season One but didn't stick with it. I'm all for "anythinig goes" humor but, sometimes that sounds better than it actually is.

Here's our other infamous/misjudged failed sitcom from the past:

I love that show - watched an episode last night before going to bed, in fact. And I have had so many exasperating "arguments" with people who don't know the show, but DO know that any comedy about a Nazi POW camp (or "concentration camp," as some would very mistakenly have it) couldn't possibly be acceptable under any circumstances...
