Screamin' Jay Hawkins
vs.
Siouxsie & The Banshees
Do like a bit of spellwork in your life? Screamin' Jay, Siouxsie, both, neither?

Spell on You, but the Nina Simone version.

I like both, but... I had to play the Siouxsie clip to remind myself of how it went. So I voted for Jalacy.

Spell on You, but the Nina Simone version. A most excellent version.

Screamin' Jay all the way. One of my very favourite tracks.

Kraftwerk missed a computer world trick by never releasing I Put a Speak and Spell on You.
Banshees for me, easily. Good shout with Nina though.

Man, I loved Spellbound when it came out. I played it again half expecting it to reveal some flaw that my teenage self was too gauche and unsophisticated to pick up on. But it still sounded fantastic. McGeogh's guitar usually gets the attention, but how good is Budgie's driving drumming? It's impossible to listen to this track without nodding your head like a loony. The other track's great too, but older, classic tracks like that always get praised on here whereas The Banshees are a little underrated on here imo.

I can't get past my dislike of the two main people to vote for either.

There's a fab energy to it - drums, guitars, vocals, everything just clicking together with great propulsion.

Spellbound.
The guitar intro that promises excitement, a world away from blues, rock, punk, or synthesisers; the vocal comes in - “...you have no choice!” ; the drums enter, with the bass and some acoustic guitar. It all builds to a frenzy, the drums literally sounding like someone being “thrown down the stairs”.
I still get a thrill from it. No offence to SJH or his legions of followers. There is no comparison.

Screamin' Jay all the way. One of my very favourite tracks. That scream at 0:40, man, it still fucking thrills me after 30+ years and god knows how many listens. His theatrical voodoo schtick aside, he had an incredible voice and the vocal performance here is one for the ages.

It's uproarious, a total one-off. I feel sorry for people who don't get it.
'Siouxsie' my foot

I'm going to be Switzerland on this one. I really like both songs for different reasons and they evoke different feelings in me.
