I totally agree. I watched it sometimes but wasn't that taken. Unlike White Horses, whose theme could make me well up.
Really good children's programmes stand not just the test of time but of growing up - I habe both series of Catweazle on DVD (Carrot for me) and all series of Monkey. Used to love the HMV section of Children's DVDs for that.

old man rayge...must surely remember this Oh, kindly DO fuck off, you skinny whippersnapper. Yep, I was alive when Dick Barton was on the radio, but if you're going down that route, there's only The Goons, Hancock's Half Hour and Journey into Space I'd respond to positively. And as for TV, Zoo Quest with David Attenborough, Billy Bunter's Schooldays, Just William (teenage Dennis Waterman!), Crackerjack!, Out of Town, Whirligig (featuring the nightmare-haunting Mr Turnip), Mr Pastry, several US horse operas such as Range Rider and The Cisco Kid, and Charlie Drake in Mick and Montmorency are the sort of thing I'd remember from my youth. As for the teeny tots, watch with mother stuff, I ever got on with Namby Pamby Andy Pandy, Sooty was all right at the time, and of course I later had a personal connection with Bill & Ben, but as far as I'm concerned, Muffin the Mule is a criminal offence. And I'm not posting any from youtube because (a) bandwidth and loading and (b) as you kindly pointed out, there's only one other on the no-payroll here who is almost as old as I am. But I can recommend, if you are interested in 1950s Brit TV generally, this site.

I follow BBC archive on twitter, and apparently, The Herbs is 51 years-old today.
They've also tweeted this Ask Aspell clip of Gordon Banks who's died. Ask Aspell was serious children's reporting but in a chat-show style, unlike Newsround.

It was a very normal experience where I'm from that kids raced home from school to watch reruns or cartoons in the afternoon. Here are the ones my friends I watched and talked about.

By far, however, was the Sgt. Bilko show with Phil Silvers. I met him when I was young with my aunt in New York City and shouted out, "It's Sgt. Bilko." He was a very nice man and think he appreciated how a 9 year-old appreciated his show from long ago.
He took a photo with me, my brother, and cousin and I had it for many years.
