Ade Edmondson just posted on Twitter: Those TV shows hardly raise a smile today, but the talents they let loose on the world - Rik Mayall, Dawn French, Alexei Sayle - did a lot of very funny stuff. And The Young Ones and Bottom are still two of our finest comedies. Or not? I'm already regretting starting this - another 17 views 0 replies job

I agree (except about the literally witless Bottom), although all the Comic Strippers were seen to better effect in The Young Ones because the writing was better. I'm wondering why you excluded Ade Edmondson and Jennifer Saunders (the latter more talented than any of them, as a writer), not to mention Robbie Coltrane, in the list of gifts they gave us?

They were always pretty variable, but they were a breath of fresh air when they came out. The best ones - The Yob, Fistful of Travellers Cheques, Strike - still stand up as great comedy. Personally I preferred them to The Young Ones.
As to the talents it produced, it's odd that one of the most talented, Peter Richardson, seemingly did very little afterwards.

I wouldn't say the talent that came from it added up to much, which is the real problem. The most visible performers were very one-note (Rik Mayall, Ade Edmonson) or not very funny (French & Saunders). I agree with G that Peter Richardson was probably the most talented of the bunch, but seemed happy keeping out of the limelight.
I still like Alexei Sayle's novels, having said that, and his radio show Imaginary Sandwich Bar was one of the finest comedy shows for years.

Not a fan of Bottom, Ray? I think it's wonderful. Good (current) thread on CaB: www.cookdandbombd.co.uk/forums/index.php/topic,82970.0.html I didn't include Robbie Coltrane because the Wiki entry says he was 'additional' or something, which made me think he was already a bit known before they started up. And Ade and Jennifer weren't really as good as their partners as performers, I believe.

I don't remember him in anything before. He did Tutti Frutti but I think that was a bit later.

i think they've aged terribly. the only one that still raises a smile is the young ones university challenge episode.
"anyway, maaarrrrry". "wait a minute, who's getting married?"
