It's a Beatles film. I don't need a plot. The things some people dislike above are what I find endearing. I think the script is actually very good, some great lines and love the youthful, sometimes amaetur anarchy of it. After all it's 4 young guys experiencing Beatlemania. Are the performances mixed, yeah, does everything work, no, do some lines fall flat, a bit, but then there'll be a good moment along in a while or just one of the lads being adorable and young and cocky n shit and you fall in love with them a little bit again you know?
I think it has a lot of charm, the music is BANGIN' and the black and white is crisp and almost lush. Also huge period charm and, like Snee said, a time capsule thang going on. I'm giving it 5 Beatle stars out of 5.

Help on the other hand is average.
And has always looked bleached out to me. A bit cheap.

The criticism isn't really about the lack of professional acting from The Beatles or the lack of strong plot, it's just all that stuff about Paul's granddad or the manager drags things down a bit. There's quite a lot of stuff in the movie that just gets a bit dull, you know?

i think Hard Day's Night is terrific! My son watched it with me a couple years ago. He's not a music geek by any means, but is aware how much I love the Beatles. He liked it and thought it was funny.

I've been SO into him lately. he's a good egg, that one.
re: criticizing "hard day's night" you can criticize anything. that's what separates mankind from the beasts. your dog might not eat what you give him but he probably won't pee on it.
I won't pee on "Hard Days Night" but I'll understand if others do. I've hiked my legs on my share of Sacred Cows. it's a bracing feeling and I highly recommend it.
I'm not going to piddle on "Help!" too much. I love "Help!" but I think it's fair to say they were sort of stuck for an ending. it helps that I don't mind those big, stupid sixties "Casino Royale" throw everything at the camera endings. It helps that Leo McKern and company are fun and not embarrassed unduly.
I think what's fun about singling out "Help!" is that what I see as it's shortcomings are very much the same things that I see as it's strengths. "hard day's night" was made to cash in on the Beatle's popularity. I think this was done in a clever and inventive way but it was still the main reason for it's being - UA was cashing in on the Beatles.
so, what to do when it's clear that another movie will do every bit as well? you cash in again. However the birds in the gilded cage feel like this one should be a working vacation.so - the preposterous plot works vacation locations into the whole.
well, a lot of what I love about "Help!" is this aspect of it - playing in the field with the tanks - the ski stuff. It may not exactly be a Bond movie but the elements of Bond satire seem sufficient to make it a brisk Beatles travelogue of sorts. another thing I like about "Help!" is how they had to up the ante a bit. Hard Day’s Night became almost instantly imitated by not only other bands making movies but by the entire movie & advertising zeitgeist of the day. so, things like "paul's adventure on the floor" and the Beethoven loving Lion seem to have the tongue very firmly in the cheek which is where I like it to be.
I think it's a lot of fun and tuney as hell but it does just end with shooting and yelling even though the gags work for me. I love Help. I think Lester and the writers have made the working vacation a funny and enjoyable one.

I'm very much with Snee on Help! I re-watched it recently and (to be honest) enjoyed it even more than I thought I was going to.

I think that a lot of people feel this way. For those of us who grew up with the media filling up the hole in our souls - The Beatles were church.

As for Hard Days Night - I think it operates in a way that children’s films do. It is a little universe that you get to visit. The plot doesn’t matter. You should be able to nod off for a few minutes of nap time and still jump right back in.
You are in the company of these four guys, at THAT moment in time. How is that anything less than wonderful?
