Is there more unwritten baseball rules than written rules? No, but the rules are pretty well enforced among players and coaches. The one that led to the fracas the other day kinda involved a couple things. The team at the plate, or offense, was up by 6 runs I think in the seventh inning, pretty late in the game. As a player, you are normally taught not to swing at a pitch with three balls, vs. a strike, because on the fourth ball, you get to take first. The offensive player was given the "take" call, meaning told not to swing, by the manager and the base coach, and he swung anyway. First rules broken, not written and written. If the guy had walked, a run would have scored anyway because the bases were full. But he swung and hit a grand slam, scoring four runs, breaking the unwritten rule. But, that's an unwritten rule in many sports - not running up the score. At a certain point, you put in the scrubs, or second team, when there's no chance a team's going to catch you. And you don't go all out to score on every possession. You play out the clock. I remember a guy on one of my rec league teams wanting to run up the score and fast break when we were up by 20 in the second half of a game. We were friends, but I had to tell him how much we'd hate it if the shoe were on the other foot.

The fires in my area. The CZU fire had burned 50,000 acres so far and displaced around 30,000 people. The LNU fire has burned around 40,000 acres so far.

Reading a profile on Maya Rudolph because she's mimics VP candidate, Kamala Harris, on SNL, I didn't realize she's UC Santa Cruz grad - she's a banana slug. That's their university mascot.

no shit! she's talented. her Beyonce impersonation used to really crack me up. it's like she's not really making fun of Beyonce but of the way people see her. she's married to... Paul Thomas Anderson? I think that's right.
Go, Banana Slugs!

Was Pat McAfee a good kicker in American football? Outside of making a pro bowl, the rest of the stats mean fuck all to me.

Surprisingly, there are some good TV analysts who are ex kickers. But they're such specialists, no one takes them seriously.

This isn't about me, but how I think I've raised my kids kinda decently.
My daughter and I go grocery shoppping at 8 am on Sundays. Her for her and her mom and me for me and my son. When we pulled up to the supermarket, a young man around my daughter's age, obviously homeless, asked me for a dollar. I gave it to him and my daughter asked him if he'd like some food. He said he wanted a bag of chips and orange juice. My daughter bought it for him and walked it outside and gave it to him. He later came back in the store and was trying to buy some more food, but was short on cash. My daughter told him to put it her cart and she'd buy it.
It's tough enough being homeless, asking for money and people treating you like you don't exist, and little acts of kindness like my daughter's, if for just half a day, makes someone feel human, goes a long way.
Very AMERICAN.
