The Mr. T t-shirts are working overtime on this one. I wish he'd let the drums open up a bit more - I think they sound awful, but I only listened at low volume.

It all sounds good to me right now. Warm, fun. Much better than expected.

Other than "Deep, Deep Feeling" being twice as long as it needs to be - grandpa hitting the bong again? - this seems stronger than Egypt Station.
I tend to like him more when he's having fun than when he's trying to make a 'grand statement,' but there's also the element of his laziness or lack thereof - there's a pretty thin line between 'casual groove' and 'unfinished song.' He tends to do a better job of it on his own, seemingly. I think other than Nigel Godrich, outside producers have kissed his ass too much. Maybe he's harder on himself than any of them are willing to be?
Anyway, will listen to the whole thing today, but pleasantly surprised so far.

This one is lovely. He still does that acoustic thing with the flute-like vocal beautifully. The other songs are ‘almost-good’ - but this one actually works without requiring any extension of good will.

I couldn't help thinking of Gav's point about the ridiculous claims made about The Beatles at around 21.00 when the interviewer credits McCartney II in leading the way for dance music, Kraut Rock and electronica!

Zane Lowe more than McCartney. He's completely up his own arse.
This is the one they single out:

Yeah he's annoying. I've not come across him before. He has one of those annoying smug "Bono" faces.

Surprisingly well-written review in Pitchfork (though it starts better than it ends): pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/paul-mccartney-mccartney-iii/I've listened a few more times and, as long as it's not held up to the standards of even Chaos and Creation (which is, god help us, 15 years ago) it's a fun look into the sandbox of a old man who still needs to play. With age may not come wisdom, but in this case it certainly comes with the ability to afford whatever toy you want. To a certain extent, the more fun he's having the more fun it is to listen to, as long as you accept that the Little Richard voice is gone for good, and he's only good for an occasional song that's not just a rehash of his typical bag of tricks. It's better than Egypt Station, anyway.

I'm not curious at all, but I do have some admiration for his work ethic and for the fact he still seems to love making music. I just read an interesting short interview with McCartney. The most humble he's ever sounded. He said since he was stuck at home, he might as well do something. They asked him about love songs since he's written so many and he said he's still confused by it so he keeps writing them. They also asked him about his gift for melodies and he answered that they just came to him easier than some he guessed. Doesn't know how he gets 'em. I think that's probably partly true, but I think he must have to work at them a little too and his instincts are pretty honed by now. The only guy I think who's probably in that class now is Stevie Wonder, but he's not doing too much anymore.

He's really been doing the rounds over the last couple of weeks - busy fella. Have a look on youtube for interviews and specials. There's a ton.

If he does a few more interviews and behaves himself I’m hopeful the authorities will remove his ankle restraints & stop forcing him to make records.
