Two things I'd say about him
1. Outrageous ability - Not just in his famed dribbling ability but the way he just saw things quicker than anyone else. In that respect his 'hand of God' goal is just as much evidence of his genius as the famous solo goal against England.
2. He was a genuine man of the people who struck true to who he was. No stuffed suit selling out for him. That's why they continued to love him in the poorest cities and countries.

A genuine working class hero. Heart as big as his nation and a irresistible force of nature on and off the pitch. A reminder of an earlier era of bigger personalities and when the game was still a working class sport universally. To think he played for years with a coke problem too.
In later years his behaviour was seen as a bit crass and unbecoming but he was a slum kid in a world of fake arseholes. When I used to see him going mental off the pitch I would laugh my ass off! I loved that about him. He was us, to some degree, but also a genius and a larger than life character in a world where such qualities are increasingly rare.
I feel like a part of my childhood has gone.

I'm indifferent about him to be honest. One of the greatest ever no doubt, but i don't hold much love for him as most do.

I feel like a part of my childhood has gone. Did you ever see the interview where he's asked something about the British. He's got this big bottle of booze and in his theatrical manner makes of a show of pouring a glass and saying in Spanish "Here's to the Irish", pours himself another drink "Here's to the Welsh!",raises his glass again "Here's to the Scottish" and then sits back contentedly having made a point of omitting the English! How can you not love him...? Diego appealed to the romantics and rebels. He's in the lineage of Garrincha yes, but also Dick Turpin and Billy The Kid.

Yeah I have. Love that kinda thing. Just people being normal and a bit cheeky. The doc last year was good - have you seen it? What struck me was how vulnerable he was. He was a shy kid called Diego who had to be MARADONA in public. You feel for him.
Boca and Napoli. Two big working class teams. Fanatical support. It adds to the romance but also the sense of destiny perhaps?

I can't post it but there's a photo in The Guardian of Maradona listening to a load of vinyl. It might be the coolest photo I've ever seen.
