I did imagine Steerpike as handsome tbh, albeit not in a particularly conventional sense.
One of my favourite things about Gormenghast was the intensity of the facial descriptions. I can't think of another writer who did that so well.

Saul Bellow John Updike Philip Roth Lorrie Moore
I'd say Raymond Carver, but he's sorta detached from his characters, detaching the reader too.
