Looking forward to Mank, but otherwise I'm pretty burnt out on murders and depravity.

He's okay. I feel I'm almost overfamiliar with his style if that makes sense. I've certainly enjoyed some of his films in the past, but I wouldn't go out of my way to see his new stuff or even rewatch some of his old stuff, he's just not that interesting to me.

Zodiac is very good.
I have a soft spot for The Game. Alien 3 was a bit of a mess really. A let down and I'll never forgive him for letting Newt and Hicks be killed off.
The rest I don't care about but liked Seven and Fight Club when they came out.
a bit meh overall.

he's not mentioned as often as he used to be. I think this is a good thing. you can't be the hot new guy forever. I saw "Alien 3" at a screening. I was a last minute addition when somebody else in a big group of people dropped out. we all went for food after. every body H-A-T-E-D it. I thought the director was super talented and said so. I got the stink-eye from everybody at the table. nobody asked me my opinion on anything for the rest of the night.
I'm yet to see "Benjamin Button" or "Gone Girl" otherwise I've seen most of those. I still think he's a super talented director but (like Alien 3) any problem I have with the movie doesn't seem fair to lay at the feet of the director. take "the game". I enjoy it very much but I know many don't. you either go with it or you don't. it's hard to suspend your disbelief the way guys in old movies check their hats. A movie can have you going and then suddenly lose you.
what I like about the Fincher movies I like (Zodiac, Se7ven) is that the mood & the performances are in step. I don't really care for "Panic Room" and have a LOT of problems with "Fight Club" but I think this still holds true - the style of the movie fits the style of the performances. I guess I forget to suspend my disbelief or something but I can still appreciate the skill on both sides of the camera.
I like the preview for "Mank". I hope i can suspend my disbelief.

I’ve watched Zodiac twice recently, simply because it popped up on TV. It’s a good film and curiously satisfying in the way it fizzles out just like the characters’ lives. Mank looks interesting!

Yes - loved Zodiac too, a really good yarn. And I'm looking forward to seeing Mank which premiers today on Netflix in the UK.

The problem with Zodiac is it's based on Naysmith's book which is very unreliable. If you an acquintance with the case, it does marr your enjoyment a bit. Still, it's a very effective piece of atmospherics and pacing. Hope to watch Manc tonight (..I hear it's about The Happy Mondays bass player).

Thoughts on Mank?
Watched it this past weekend - great acting, sets, wardrobe, etc. All very 'professional.' Stilted dialog that was trying so hard to capture the 'style of the time.' Enjoyable enough, but ended up being pretty superficial in the end.
I liked "The Social Network" a lot - fictionalized to a degree I'm sure, but still managed to be about how moral dilemmas were dealt with to some degree. Mank sort of paid lip service to that idea, but it came off very secondary to invoking style points.

I posted on Mank on the "watching.." film thread. I thought it was a waste of time. Pompous cinema of "quality" which was inert and lifeless. Basically what you said, except I didn't find it at all enjoyable.

I liked "Mank" way more than either of you. I thought it could have used a little tightening up in "the second act" but I thought it all came out in the wash.
I think it's like "Ed Wood" - the film makers picked a real person and a style and told a story about them. sure, this was more self important than Ed Wood but I think it had a lot more on it's mind.
I would say I think "Ed Wood" is the superior film of the two but I do think "Mank" was well crafted and well done.

Well-crafted and well-done for sure. And I liked it more than G did for sure. But I think "Social Network" managed the 'style points' too while mainly being about the moral minefield that the subject brought about. I think "Mank" was concentrating on the style points to the point where it overwhelmed the heart of the story.
I mean, maybe they were trying to make him a bit impenetrable emotionally and that was the moral point - I guess you could make that case. Just saying for me it didn't really work.
I'm sure Marion Davies' heirs liked it, though - certainly revives her reputation as a ditz a little bit (and is probably closer to the truth than 'Kane' in that regard).

you recognize that gal from "Mean Girls"? she's the one that becomes a Weather Girl. I thought she was very good.

I’ve seen about half of his output. Started Mank the other night, but realized a few minutes in that it was the wrong film for that particular eveningwill probably come back to it out of curiosity. But I really don’t enjoy Fincher’s style much. Or put another way... I think there’s too much style in Fincher’s style.
